Sammy Sosa to Dodgers for Shawn Green?

Dodgers and Cubs to Discuss a Possible Green-Sosa Trade

By Jason Reid and Steve Henson, Times Staff Writers

All-Star right fielders Shawn Green and Sammy Sosa would switch teams in a trade proposal the Dodgers and Chicago Cubs plan to discuss at next week's general manager meetings, baseball executives said Friday.

The clubs will explore a deal that would send Green to Chicago and bring Sosa ? the 1998 National League most valuable player ? to Los Angeles in an exchange of high-priced outfielders.

The Cubs were among the first teams to contact the Dodgers about acquiring Green, and baseball sources said Dodger General Manager Paul DePodesta and Cub General Manager Jim Hendry planned to pursue talks early during the meetings beginning Tuesday at Key Biscayne, Fla.

That trade makes sense, as much as I'd like Sosa in Miami it just doesn't seem to make any sense from the Cubs perspective...

I've got an idea.

LA gets Sammy

CHI gets Shawn Green

FLA gets Choi :|

Choi was a lot better for us then he was for LA. I would unload Encarnacion for Choi.

Hmmmm, marlins get Choi, Sosa, and Green in exchange for absoloutly nothing. :plain

I like it. :mischief2

OK, I'm sorry, but I don't see how this makes sense for either team.

1) The Dodgers take on a contract with more/money years when they try to keep Beltre/Finley or attempt to sign Pedro/Pavano/Beltran.

2) The Cubs acquire someone who was deemed inferior in the outfield so was relegated to first base...but he can't play first base because DLee is a superior first-baseman and can't play anywhere else. Not to mention, his (Green) power and health have declined in recent years.

3) The Cubs really don't "rid" themselves of Sosa's contract because their commitment to Green is still in excess of $15 million even if they don't pay a dime of Sosa's deal.

I think it makes no sense at all, especially now; the Cubs could get a big market team (Red Sox?, Mets) to take almost all of his contract in January or February if those teams get shut out in free-agency.

I mean, from the Cubs standpoint, the deal that most makes sense for their needs is the three way where Sosa ends up in Colorado, Floyd in Chicago and Preston on the Mets. The Cubs get much more financial flexibility to resign Nomar and Alou...because, at this point, I think that's their goal.

They'd have to pay those two suckers, thats what they get. Hell LA would probably send us Darren Dreifort too. We would get 4 players for nothing, but take on about 40 million in payroll.
