The guy didn't say he was not going to sign, but that he would like to "test the market". Believe me, I don't think there is a team crazy enough to unload more than 28 to 30 million dollars on a pitcher who just had a great year, even though his 3-year progression shows otherwise. Odalis Perez, on the other hand, had a great year not too long ago and after that his numbers started to decline. Clement, like it has been said before, is the picture of inconsistency and I wouldn't waste good money on him. Wright was almost a failure until Leo Mazzone took him as his pet project (the guy is a genius, period). But, again, not worthy of 21 million. My guess is that if the Marlins were to guarantee a fourth year on their offer to Pavano, he would most definetely sign it. BTW, who do you suggest we sign if we don't sign LoDuca, Mike Matheny? HA!

If the Marlins were going to spend $7-$8 million/year on a pitcher, Odalis Perez would be the guy to do it with. I don't think 2 starters is necessary, though. I'd get a Perez and then use the money for Clement to sign a serviceable starter (Valdez), a swing guy that would relieve or start (like Wilson Alvarez or Dave Burba), and a good LH reliever (Rheal Cormier or Chris Hammond). Lo Duca could be replaced with much cheaper alternatives at catcher (like Doug Mirabelli, John Flaherty, or Damian Miller), leaving money to sign an OF (Ben Grieve or Jermaine Dye), a 1B (John Olerud or Tony Clark), and a reliever (Jim Mecir). It would give us a much deeper team.

I like el Duque, but he doesn't seem reliable as a starter any more due to his health IMO.
November 10, 200421 yr Some connections to keep in your mind regarding value signings. Wiley, our new pitching coach, worked with Jaret Wright early in his career. Atlanta is strapped for cash and this guy is like 27 and finally healthy. Bowa knows Milton pretty well and he would love to get those fly balls he gives up into the deep right field at JRS. Lieber does not have a connection to this coaching staff but he is two years off Tommy John Surgery, like AJ, and has great stuff and great character. All of these guys could be had for a three year deal which starts at $5 million and escalates somewhat. Beinfest said they did not want to be left to address the bullpen in the middle of the season like the past two years. This would clear some money for a set-up guy behind mota.
