Original Marlin Trevor Hoffman

Featured Replies

On all the multiplicitous (that's not in my dictionary, I checked) pen-pitching postings, I don't see Trevor Hoffman.

37 yrs old, an original '93 Marlin.

Has had his ups and downs.

I followed him last season (thanks to Fantasy baseball.)

He pitched 54 innings, gave up 42 hits, had 53 K's, had a 2.30 ERA.

Was paid 2 and 1/2 million plus incentives.

Because I had occasion to monitor him last season, I think he is ready to really produce in any bull-pen.

Here's a veteran, growing back into stride, that IMO could really help the Marlins.

if we get a good deal i would love to have this guy come back...

good fastball nasty change-up...kept guy off balance alot last year..

Hoffman is not a free agent.

Make an offer. Deal.

and why would san diego trade him?

And why did we trade Preston Wilson, Brad Penny and others?

Teams trade because they think they need something in return.

Thought even Das Texan knew that.

Hoffman is not a free agent.

You don't trade for something (an older closer) that you can get on the free-agent market. If we're trading for a closer, it's going to be Urbina because the Tigers want to trade Urbina, the Padres don't necessarily want to trade Hoffman.

I think there is merit in trading for a player that the other team doesn't want to give up, as opposed to bidding for a free agent they are willing to let go.

Hoffman is not a free agent.

we had to move Preston and Penny for money reasons.... San Diego doesnt have that problem right now( I think)

I don't remember the exact terms of the option the Padres hold for Hoffman's services in 2005 but I believe it's similar to the deal they had in 2004, which paid him about $2.5 million (after incentives). In fact I believe he met the criteria based on 2004 appearances and it automatically kicked in.

For that kind of money it's hard to believe they (the Padres) would willingly see the guy go unless we or any other club made them an offer they couldn't refuse. Also keep in mind that he gave SD a hometown discount just to stay near family and friends so he's not inclined to move on his own.

Sure it would be great to see the guy in a Marlins uni but I for one don't see it happening.

First off, it depends on what they would want in return. If were giving away our future for him i don't think he's worth it. He's 37 years old been banged up the past couple of years, also if his deal is really about 2.5 mill then the padres would be nuts to let him go at this point, for them he is worth the risk, 2.5 isn't a lot for them to pay.

Those were quite possibly the worst examples you could have come up with. We traded Wilson and Penny because we couldn't afford, or weren't going to be able to afford, them any longer. Hoffman is a bargain...not even close to being the same situation.

We should wait until the arbitration deadline. Kim and Urbina may become available.

if im not mistaken the man is from san diego ... took less money to stay in san diego ... and he is not pitching anywhere besides san diego

I don't think the Padres have a significant reason to trade him.
