Another mass offensive south of Baghdad

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Some 5,000 U.S. Marines, British troops and Iraqi commandos launched a new offensive Tuesday aimed at clearing a swath of insurgent hotbeds south of Baghdad, the U.S. military said.

The joint operation kicked off with early morning raids in the town of Jabella in Babil province, netting 32 suspected insurgents, the U.S. military said in a statement. Jabella is 50 miles south of Baghdad.

Insurgent violence has increased in the areas south of the capital in "an apparent attempt to divert attention" away from the U.S-led assault on the militant stronghold of Fallujah, the military said.

"Mission Accomplished." Seriously though, I hope we stop the insurgents and bring peace to the country.

Except that most of the members of the "Coalition of the Willing" have left. We've lost all the countries of notable size except for Britain and Japan.

Worst of all, now the Pentagon is saying that we need more U.S. troops in the country.

I don't see this insanity ending anytime soon.

This is Vietnam all over again, just trying to force democracy onto another country.

He would if he was still running for re-election, but now he can do whatever the hell he wants. It's a scary thought that keeps me up at night.

Yeah only 1200 Americans have died, I am happy you find that acceptable.

What exactly have we won? I don't feel any safer now than I did March 2003.

All this war has done is distracted us from the real War on Terror, and wasted billions of dollars that should be used at home.

I never said that is acceptable. But you are comparing to Vietname where we lost tens of thousands of lives and we got our ass kicked. This is not happening in Iraq. I never said anyhting about winning something. You might say you don't feel safe but that is your opinion. IMHO I feel safer knowing that there is one less dictator out there and one less pro-"Lets bring America to their knees" country out there.

A little late, eh Pentagon?

This is a good thing though. This was one of the problems all along, Rumsfeld the self-appointed military genius tried to do this with his "small, highly mobile" force and now finally they admit we need more troops. 'Course ideally we'd have a large enough multinational force that we wouldn't need more U.S. troops, but that's another issue.

I said "ideally" we'd have a larger multinational force. But have it your way. That's not even the point. Regardless of where the troops are coming from, the point is the forces sent in weren't enough.

The difference is in the Gulf War all we were doing was driving out Saddam's forces from Kuwait. Clearly we had plenty of troops for that.

After a relatively short initial conflict this time (which again we had sufficient troops for), we have a long drawn-out fight street by street against these insurgents, and we've basically been asked to secure the entire country, limit looting, hunt for WMDs, train an army of Iraqis, defend political leaders and police operations, hunt down terrorist leaders, secure weapons sites, and prepare a country for democratic elections.

in vietnam we didnt really get our ass kicked. we just got tired of putting up and getting nowhere with the fight. 12 viet kong died for every american soldier that died.

Vietnam was a very bloody conflict and we were winning the war, but it would have required several more casualties, and being an unpopular war the politics involved made us pull out. A few more months and about 20,000 more casualties and we would have overran saigon. It was more a question of is it worth it.

As for Iraq, we are wasting billions of dollars in a war to seize WMDs that wer enot there. However, good has come of this, with minor casualties we took down the empire (Remmeber Ho Chi Minh (sp?) never fell to us forces). And now the people will work towards democracy that the pessimists say wont happen but ther eis no factual evidence supporting that. Furthermore the mistakes that have been made are made. Where are the solutions, its obvious for whatever reason that no other countries will assist in the fight but thats ok mostly the fact that the iraqi military is now on our side, that adds troops to the battle. Solutions? Finish what was started and do it as quickyl and effectively as possible, we cannot turn back the clock lets moce forward. As for stopping the Baathiust regime and overthrowing Saddam which was why we went in to iraq, to stop saddam from creating weapons, and we got him. Mission Accomplished. Now there is a new mission that involves the rebuilding of iraq. That mission is still in the works

Deluding ourselves that the euros would somehow step up and help in a significant way was hogwash from the start.

Considering a lot of them were against the war in the first place, I'd say that's a safe assumption.
