November 27, 200421 yr The Marlins have offered right-hander Armando Benitez a one-year, $5 million contract, but the closer's agent doubts Benitez will pitch in Florida next year. "I wouldn't hold out any hope for the Marlins getting Armando back," Mike Powers said Friday. Florida's offer also includes a $6 million club option with a $1 million buy out, meaning Benitez is guaranteed $6 million with the deal even if the Marlins decline the option. But Powers said the offer from General Manager Admin Beinfest was less than what his client wants. Without getting into specifics, he said Benitez even offered a "hometown" discount. "I've dealt with Admin on that issue. He made us the offer. We came back to him with something else," Powers said. "We tried to do something reasonable for him to come back there, but I don't think that's going to happen. The ball's pretty much in Admin's court. We're keeping our options open." Powers said several clubs are preparing to make offers to Benitez, who led the National League with a career-best 47 saves last season. The Marlins would use Guillermo Mota in save situations if the don't re-sign Benitez. http://www.palmbeachpost.com/sports/conten...rlins_1127.html
November 27, 200421 yr If the balls in Admin's court the Benitez is gone for sure....The Fish wont pay...
November 27, 200421 yr Jesus people, calm down. Two weeks ago we weren't even contacting Benitez, now we've made a contract offer, they respectfully declined the one year offer and came back with likely a counter offer. I doubt that the money is an issue, it's the length. They probably asked Admin to either guarantee the second year at $6 or put in vesting-options so Armando can pitch his way into job security. It's part of the negotiating process, and when you consider that the two biggest bidders for his services (Indians and Cubs) have decided to turn elsewhere (Wickman, Kolb) it leaves us as the biggest suitor for his services. There's still a long way to go on this.

November 27, 200421 yr Here's an idea: 2 years...$10 million. Who's with me? 622276 That's probably what they responded with. IMO, Benitez will come back if we give him 2 guaranteed years with an option for a third that becomes guaranteed if he reaches X number of IP or appearances. By the time his contract is up, Spooney or Mota can close and we're all set. I think the presence of Spooneybarger is making it difficult for Beinfest to go beyond 2 years, but it's something we have to do. Keeping 'Mando gives us a sick pen that makes it essentially a 6 inning game with Spooney to Mota to Mando.
November 27, 200421 yr um.... why would armando settle for 5 million a year when percival just got 6 million a year and is not in the same class anymore by a large portion as armando. see my post a couple weeks ago.
November 27, 200421 yr We gave him a chance he kinda owes us to come back atleast for another year. If he leaves I hope it shows that this year was a fluke for him

He was a pitcher with a three era who certainly could have signed with another team. He pitched outstanding for the marlins and proved to be a good bargain for them. He owes them nothing so don't pretend that he was some hack pitcher who was in desperate need of a team.
November 27, 200421 yr I would actually rather keep Mando than Pavano. Hopefully they'll keep working on a package that'll make him think twice before leaving.

And this is roundabout logic, but try to follow my thought: The Tigers are an awful location to go to simply because they have no starting pitching to speak of and a lineup that is "blah" at best. They knew this, so they overpay to get people to come to try to build up respect again (see Pudge and Uggie from last year), meaning that the money they give out should not be factored in when considering "market value." Combine that with the fact that every big market team is set at closer or does not deem the closer's role to be top priority (Mets, Angels) and you'd see that 'Mando will not get a better offer than the price we're willing to go (you think that two notably cheap organizations like the Giants and Cubs are going to break the bank on him?); he just wants us to give him job security...we owe it to him if he's really willing to go "hometown" for us.

He played with 3 different teams in 03'! lol give me a break. If he leaves I hope he plays like garbage..
November 27, 200421 yr Um...I'd say the Angels are comfortable at closer with Frankie Rodriguez people. and Armando is done in New York...so to even mention either of those teams is stupid. and even if Detroit overpaid...by how much did they overpay? 1 million? 2 million? is Mando worth only 1 million more per year or the same as Percivial? Think.

If he leaves I hope he plays like garbage.. 622324 In 03 his era was within .1 of his career ERA. Yet you somehow in your infinite wisdom concluded that he was on decline for that. It makes absolutely no sense. By the standard you set forth you would conclude that Carlos Beltran is on decline and will be lucky to get one million this year in The FA market because he's on decline. Sadly by your standard, the statement I made above would not be gross hyperbole. Instead it would be a legitimate statement. Armando was right on track with his career ERA when he was picked up by the marlins, he was pursused by other teams but instead knew that if he could get a 1 year deal in a pitcher friendly park. He could pad his stats and make a bigger buck after that year. He owes you nothing, His partnership with The Marlins was a mutual agreement that fitted both sides needs.
November 27, 200421 yr why is it that players always 'owe' something to the orgnaization...but nothing is ever 'owed' to the players by the organization.

I know that wasn't so bad for them considering they have Beltran and Lidge, but I am just saying you never know how a set-up man will take the job of being a closer.

Francisco Rodriguez closed games for the Angels for a couple of stretches this year...they got an idea of what he will do when the man. Dotel hadnt done that before. And the Astros much like the Marlins are notoriously cheap, except with the Astros they have a condition....they will spend money on players named Biggio and Bagwell and they will spend money on people from East Texas. I know a lot of you give this organization immunity for 2003. So now we can be complacent for a few years now. If you want to follow the Hands On Your Ass philosophy and be a member of this joyous club then go for it. Me...I expect a winning organization. We are cheap and I'll say it again..Miami fans make every excuse in the book. Show up for games, especially in the thick of a pennant race. I swear the only area that can compete for worse fans is Oakland. I have never seen two franchises that put a good product on the field and still cant draw s***. And the same excuse is used in both places. I call bulls***. I could understand if this franchise was the Rockies or Diamondbacks...two organizations that have zero clue as to what they are doing. We arent. Move this team to Vegas or someplace that will actually appreaciate a winning franchise.
November 28, 200421 yr I hate to say it, but this FO has been working on bottom fishing mode most of the time. Some time it works good (Pudge and Mando), but expect to pick some crap out of the bottom when nothing else is available (Oliver). Notice that both Mando and Pudge deals were done late in the off season. Do not expect any decent FA deals done any time soon. they will wait til most of the other org make their big moves and get their pieces, and then act on the best opportunities available at that time (and bottom fish). I'm not hopeful on Mando or Pavano coming back. Only expect them back if they are willing to take a deep hometown discount. And I just don't see that happending. Hoping for another miracle on 05. Hopefuly we can pull a couple of good fishes from the bottom.
November 28, 200421 yr By the time his contract is up, Spooney or Mota can close and we're all set. Those two guys can do the deed for us. Pavano is history but there is still a chance for Mando (maybe).

The Marlins are far from a winning franchise if you want to compare their winning percentage throughout their existence they are one of the worst in the league. Yes they have direction now, but how long have they had it? The Marlins future looks bright, the attendance rose alot this season and with a new stadium on the way and with competitive teams year in and year out this team will continue to draw. Miami probably doesn't have that great of fans, but whatever neither did Atlanta or New York but with time they are now drawing well.
