According to the latest ESPN's Rumor List...the Marlins are the second on the list (behind the Angels) to get Hudson...I know that there was an article about three weeks ago that didnt really say much, but has anyone heard anything recently?...

 

I for one would love to have Hudson here...he's a proven, consistent winner. Not CY Young stuff, but exactly what we need.

I'd like to point out that the Billy Beane A's have never traded a "star" player before his contract expired, so it may take a lot to get us Hudson. With Harden pitching very well and Street ready to explode in a year or two, the A's can afford to part with Hudson, but not if they want to have a serious chance for 2005.

 

I'll be the first to welcome Hudson with open arms, but I'm not holding my breath.

I have to agree with Swifty, it's not Beane's modus operandi.

 

It may have been at the ESPN site, I forget where, but Beane was asked to comment on Hudson's "trade me or pay me" stuff and he just brushed it off, saying in so many words he'd heard it before and it didn't affect his decision-making in the past and it wouldn't this time either.

The other thing working against Hudson visavis the Fish is that we would have to trade for him, and this is a team bereft of depth. To acquire Hudson almost by definition you weaken yourself at another position.

 

Our solution to our starting pitcher situation will be found in the free agent market not by trading one of our better players and creating a new problem.

...Then again, getting Kendall was relatively out of character (high paid slap hitter), so who knows. What I do know is that whoever trades for Hudson (or Zito) will have to give up major league ready talent, or a major league veteran signed for a modest amount for the next 2-3 years (because, trading a one year rental for another makes little senes). With that in mind, Castillo is just about the only guy we could trade, and the A's would have a 1-2 of Luis and Kendall, which gives them a great chance to win.

 

Personally, I think we need to find a way to get (if we've decided Hudson is our guy, and we're going to go for it all in 2005) a third team involved (Angels?) who want some of our prospects, and have a desire to get Hudson out of the AL, or AL West (because there is zero chance Beane makes a trade within his division).

We'd need to have contract talks with Hudson, if he decides to test free agency he will be the most coveted pitcher and will either go to the Yanks or the Sox.

The deal can be agreed to, but contingent upon getting a contract worked out...the O's did it with DLee last off-season.

No way could we afford that rotation. Ortiz will get at least $6 mil, and some team is going to over value Wright and give him $7 mil a season (especially after what Benson got).

Perhaps, the current tag on Wright is 5 million. Beinfest would have options, it may not be all that crucial to land another starter...it might be overkill.

 

Even so, we could sign one top SP, and make the bullpen a strength. Adding a bat like Dunn, gives us a chance to win any game even if that means Ismael pitching every 5th game. I'd be willing to eat half of Enc's salary to make that trade happen. I don't know how the Reds are doing financially but if the Beckett for Dunn trades were true, I can't see why they wouldn't be interested in a better yet older pitcher in Hudson.

Beckett is only making 1 million more than Dunn and that deal would be straight up. Even if they took half of Encarnacion's payroll that would already be adding 2 million.

Yeah because that someone apparently has a glass ceiling of potential he just hasn't met yet. I am almost beginng to expect Beckett to come out next year with a bazooka attatched to his right arm at this point the way people skeet all over him.

That's all hearsay anyhow. I don't want to trade Castillo, so it'd depend on what the A's want. If we'd have to give up two promising prospects to get a player like Dunn...then yes I think it's worth it. Our RF is an offensive liability...unless we have some future stability by acquiring Hudson in the form of a long term contract with him or by trading for a player who is more feasible as far as our economics are concerned then we shouldn't contemplate trading for Timmy.

 

Dunn is making peanuts, he's very young, he's one of the best power hitters in the league, and we need power more than anything else in our lineup which was our big weakness last season. And we'd still have loads of money to beef up the pen and the rotation.

I don't see what was so out of character about the trade. The guy is good for putting up an OBP around .400, and .800 OPS catchers are a hard commodity to find. I thought this was a good trade on Beane's part.

I don't see the A's taking Castillo for Hudson. They need major help on offense and in the bullpen. Kendall was a good start, but they need at least one near-MLB-ready stud power prospect and (with Mecir and Hammonds free agency) a young arm that's ready to contribute to the bullpen. They've already got Nick Swisher in the OF, but they'll need much more production than what they got from RF and and 1B. Castillo would be a good upgrade for them at 2B, but at his price there are cheaper alternatives that are just as good (Placido Polanco and Mark Grudzdljfkjefeieurkndan) or better alternatives at around the same price (Jeff Kent).

On SportsCenter this morning Jeremy Stark said that Billy Beane is ready to break up the trio (yay) but when naming teams with "lots of interest", did not name the Marlins(boo).

I think we'd be better off in the long run by staying pat as opposed to dealing for one of the Big Three.

The Marls shouldn't give away Hermidia or other of few decent prospects we have left just to get a pitcher, who although very talented, will not stay with the team for an extended period. We gave up a large portion of our top prospects in the 2003 trades, and we shouldn't trade the last few good prospects for 2 (?) years of Hudson.
