December 11, 200421 yr Two questions actually for the soon to be Shortstop for the Red Sox... 1) In an article I read it said Renteria was the MVP of the '97 series. I thought Livan was? 2) How good is he defensively?
December 11, 200421 yr Livan was. Maybe they meant in their opinion, most people don't think Livan really was even though he was named it. And he is a gold glove cailber player
December 11, 200421 yr Livan was the MVP of the 97 Series. Edgar is very good defensively, but not as good as Gonzalez.

December 11, 200421 yr He is without question a better defensive player than those two. 632573 Umm..Orlando Cabrera won the gold glove of the NL in 03. How can you say that Edgar is without question better than him?

December 11, 200421 yr actually in my opinion Cabrera is a cheaper and better version of Renteria Renteria has more rep because he won the title in 97 and plays for the lovable red birds. in the other hand Cabrera put up monster numbers year in and out for the lonely expos

How can you say that Edgar is without question better than him? 632578 Biased. You're right, both are very good defensive players at short. I would still take Edgar ahead of Cabrera. Off topic...the fact that Gonzalez didn't win the gold glove last year is still amazing to me. Anyone that watched him play daily would find it hard to believe that anyone had a better year at short.
December 11, 200421 yr Cabrera has better range than Renteria (although it's a coin-flip) but Renteria has a much stronger and more accurate throwing arm.
December 11, 200421 yr The only thing holding Alex back is his patience at the plate. He has shown, over several years, and several streaks, that when he is patient, he can hit over .300......the rest of the time he is a .220 hitter. Alex is another Marlin that could have a break out year. We need another hitting coach that can bring out the best in both Alex and Encarnacion. Robinson may understand mechanics, but he has yet shown he can teach situational hitting.
December 12, 200421 yr Livan was the MVP not Edgar, although I don't think Livan should have been the MVP. And Edgar playes GREAT defense, but we have a better defensive SS right now.
