Joe Sheehan of baseballprospectus.com

On Pedro: Pedro is a real good #2 starter.

On Renteria:Renteria overrated on defense. He's not a 10M a year deal.

On Matheny: Doesn't hit and it's another hole in that lineup.

On DBacks: Ortiz signing could blow up in their face. The Glaus signing was also a mistake because he can't play third and if they put him at first it will bloack some of the guys the DBAcks having coming up in the system.

Something he said especially for PhishPhan: He said the DBacks have had the worst signings so far.

That Joe is quite negative, isn't he?

Who the hell pays Sexson 4/48? Damn, Seattle is run by a bunch of m00ktards. Has he ever played a full season?

2000 - 148 games (between CLE and MIL)

2001 - 158 games

2002 - 157 games

2003 - 162 games

Seems pretty healthy to me.

But can you argue with him?

Phillips on ESPNEWS now:

The Carlos Lee to MIL could set the table for the ChiSox to make a run at Drew or Beltran.

WTF? What kind of sense does that make? They made themselves significantly worse at 1 position in order to make themselves significantly better at another for a lot more money?

Kirkijian, Gammons and LV mayor Oscar Goodman to be on ESPNEWS at different points today.

But can you argue with him?

On most of these....Yes, I can..

Pedro - He's probably right about Pedro... But if the Mets coaches can protect him (watch his pitch counts, make sure he gets the rest he needs, etc..), it could be a good year for Pedro... He's definitely gonna be high maintenance, but this is not, by far, a guaranteed bust.

Renteria - He obviously hasn't seen him play day in and day out to say he's overrated defensively... A lot of teams are overpaying for players these days. Is he worth $10mil a year? Maybe not.... Is he worth this much in comparison to what other players have been getting, and is his value high in the current market? Hell yeah..

Matheny - Not the hitter Pierzynski is, but I wouldn't say the Giants have a whole lot of holes in their lineup... They were 2nd in the NL in runs scored last season.. A mere 8 total runs behind St. Louis. How does a team with so many gaping holes in their lineup score so many runs? And don't tell me Barry Bonds. He can only do so much... The rest of the guys have picked it up (Snow, Durham, Feliz, Alfonzo, Mohr, Tucker, etc...)

D-Backs - Russ Ortiz has been one of the winningest pitchers the last few years. A career record of 103-60... This guy just knows how to win, plus our negative friend gave no reasons for why Ortiz might "blow up in their face"... As for Glaus, you can't blame a team for gambling on a guy like Glaus. I hated being on the opposite end during the 2002 World Series, watching him....

Gammons: Sox want to reshape the clubhouse to "play the game right" type of guys.

On Sox: They are alittle short on the Burnett deal. They won't get Hudson.

But can you argue with him?

Yeah but that's all in pitchers' parks. He's never pitched in a hitter's park. He also mentioned the high walk rate.

Dude, a pitcher doesn't win over 100 games by pitching in pitcher's parks. They do play half their games on the road. If playing for teams with great pitcher's parks was the only reason he's been successful, his career record should be somewhere around .500...

I watched this guy as a Giants fan, and yes, sometimes his control was a little out of whack.. But the guy knows how to win.

Remember all this analysis is SABRmetrically.

But I agree with you, he does know how to win. He did this to the Marlins many times last year.

Kirkjian to be on for next 20 minutes on ESPNEWS. Going to talk about the Expos/Nationals/51's

Tim: They have gone way to far for this to fall apart it would be way to embarrassing for both sides. The city council is being rediculous. The mayor also screwed this up big time. Coucil was wrong for changing this so late in the game. But he believes it will get done.

On Las Vegas: At this time LV doesn't make sense RIGHT now. Long term they can and will.

Northern Virginia: Not out of it. But Virginia politics gets in the way and current site would be a NIGHTMARE.

Oscar Goodman to be on ESPNEWS at 5:30.

I never said the signings by the D'Backs were good, or moves I would have made in their shoes. What my beef with you about the D'Backs was is that you said they were rebuilding and basically conceeding the next few years. Meanwhile I said they weren't and they showed it by going out and spent money. How much money has Loria spent?

Last I checked the D'Backs and Marlins both finished out of the playoffs last year and that is what matter. The D'Backs are trying to do something.

Also a question for you since you think Mr. Sheehan is more than right about all this. Did you also agree with him when he picked the Marlins to finish dead last last year in the NL East? He seems to be a great prognosticator to me.

Angels designated RHP Bobby Jenks for assignment.

Jenks's future is in doubt after a recurrence of a stress reaction in his elbow, so there's a pretty good chance that he'll clear waivers. He's not going to be ready for the start of 2005.

I hope Jenks clears waiver as he has a 100 mph fastball.

He might not be too bright but man can he play with the radar gun.
