December 22, 200421 yr Unfortunately people tend to fear something they don't understand, like Islamic fundamentalism. 638370 What's so hard to understand about an impressively large heap of rubble and ~3000 dead in downtown NYC? I rather think Islamic fundamentalism's distilled threat is easier to grasp than say - how to open some of those damn child proof pill bottles the drug stores are handing out these days. 640374 Not fundamentalism in and of itself but its relation to the rest of the people.
December 22, 200421 yr Without fundamantalism, where do the bomb vest wearing loons come from? 640691 Poverty and frustration.
December 22, 200421 yr yes, because people in Mexico living in cardboard boxes are bombing NYC because they are poor and we are "rich".
December 22, 200421 yr the hatred for the U.S. and the Western world stems to WWI and the events following.
December 22, 200421 yr the hatred for the U.S. and the Western world stems to WWI and the events following. 640847 Actually it extends farther back to Imperial Britain.
December 22, 200421 yr indeed, but a hatred for the western world as a whole really was set ablaze in the events concerning WWI and post WWI.
December 23, 200421 yr indeed, but a hatred for the western world as a whole really was set ablaze in the events concerning WWI and post WWI. 640943 A bit of you has to empathize though furman. Resentment toward industrial and carpet bagging north imposed on the south still lingers to this day does it not?

Resentment toward industrial and carpet bagging north imposed on the south still lingers to this day does it not? 641062 oh of course. Part of me does empathize with them (well, industry in the South was coming...it was welcomed by Calhoun in the 1840s I believe, but that's another story)...in fact, many compare our reconstruction of Iraq to the Reconstruction of the 1860s and 70s in the South. There are obvious differences between the two (secession, 9/11/, etc.), but yes...I think part of me...and part of most Americans must empathize with these people. "All we ask is to be let alone." - Jefferson Davis But, then there's that other part of me.......
December 23, 200421 yr indeed, but a hatred for the western world as a whole really was set ablaze in the events concerning WWI and post WWI. 640943 That is very true. It is especially apparent in what happened to Lawerence of Arabia. Campaigned hard for Britian to give the former Ottoman territories in the Arabian Peninsula independance but when Britain wouldn't grant it at the end of WW1, if I remember right, he committed suicide or he went into seclusion as a result of the imperial train of thought.
December 23, 200421 yr And your reason Haiti isn't full of bomb vest wearing loons is what? They're not oil rich and aren't being oppressed by us. We've already gone over this. That's a tired argument.

No. Poverty-driven violence occurs everywhere, and has throughout history. We are talking about terrorism laid on other countries. Poverty and frustration is NOT a valid reason for 9/11. It's NOT a valid reason for "bomb vest wearing loons" to run around Israel and other countries. In fact, some of these psychos are wealthy as crap! The poverty and frustration EXCUSE is simply that...an excuse, not a reason.

The poverty and frustration EXCUSE is simply that...an excuse, not a reason. 641482 Nobody is arguing that its an excuse but rather a conduit for the creation of terrorists. Certainly you can't give many example of wealthy nations leading the charge of terrorists can you? People act for reasons they at the time see fit furman. The argument that people in the middle east are inherently terrorist driven or that their culture makes them want to engage in terrorism is borderline racist and terrible(not saying thats what you are arguing). There is a reason people act the way they do and its rarely because they are inherent by their culture. Individuals take responsibility, not cultures. Are Germans apt toward genocide? Are white males apt toward molesting kids? Are southerners apt toward lynching people of different color? Are people in upstate Michigan apt toward bombing Federal buildings? To argue that a culture or region of people are driven to act in a certain way without any evidence is to ignore that individuals act under their individual conditions. Its bottom up rather than top down.
December 23, 200421 yr I think culture plays a large influence...now, am I saying that all muslims are inclined to terrorist activity, or even have a larger chance? No. But we are talking about fundamentalist Muslims...who I could compare to a smaller sect of the examples you gave.
December 24, 200421 yr I think culture plays a large influence...now, am I saying that all muslims are inclined to terrorist activity, or even have a larger chance? No. But we are talking about fundamentalist Muslims...who I could compare to a smaller sect of the examples you gave. 641637 Islam as a religion is inclined to terrorism. I am not being racist but their creed is what seperates the Shi'ites and the Sunni's. I believe the Shi'ites are the ones who kill all infidels (nonmuslims) and Sunni's are the ones who are supposed to convert infidels to Islam, and if they refuse to convert, be killed.
December 24, 200421 yr Is gangs going around the streets with automatic and semi automatic rifles doing whatever they please, much better? Drug dealers and gangs aren't into random terrorism to gain some sort of political end. Their motives are very traditional criminal ones that can be treated with traditional law enforcment answers. 641537 Murder is terrorism. If you are scaring people, then it is terrorism.
December 27, 200421 yr Certainly you can't give many example of wealthy nations leading the charge of terrorists can you? Bader Meinhoff, Red Brigades, Aum Shinrikyo, Weather Underground, SDS, etc. Rich nations are well represented. 641693 I hate to say this but ......PWNED
December 28, 200421 yr Author Gang activity is considered terrorism, it even says so in Websters! While it may not be the same traditional terrorism of walking into a building and blowing yourself up or something, it's still a form of terrorism, albeit on a much lesser level. http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=terrorism

While it may not be the same traditional terrorism of walking into a building and blowing yourself up or something, it's still a form of terrorism, albeit on a much lesser level. http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=terrorism 643652 The question is which definition of terrorism we are using. If you use the FBI definition or maybe White's or Laquer's then gangs are terrorist bodies. By those defintions (which vary slightly from one another) terrorism is violence against military AND (not or) non military targets (for purposes of political gain)
