Red Sox signed outfielder Chip Ambres to a minor league contract.

Ambres, a 1998 first-round pick, hit .241/.352/.449 and stole 26 bases in 35 attempts for Double-A Carolina last season. He's never going to fulfill former expectations, but he still might end up as a useful reserve at some point. He just turned 25 this month.

Because they have one of the worst farm systems in baseball.

 

That's one reason, for example, they are willing to eat most of Kim's contract in exchange for the chance to acquire a couple of prospects. Theo is trying to repopulate their farm system with some players who at least have a chance to make the bigs.
