December 28, 200421 yr I wonder why they didn't have the warning system? India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and many of the other countries have pretty good communications because of efforts in the last 5 years to get radios and phone lines to most parts of the countries.
December 28, 200421 yr i am amazed they actually think they have a definite death toll at this point. 643640 I wouldn't be surprised at 200,000+ by the end....that would still be amazing.
December 28, 200421 yr what exactly are you going to do? in the poor regions especially there is virtually nothing that could be done, even when the waters recede signifying the huge tsunami approaching.

It involves sirens, shelters, and planning. The Indian Ocean rim should have it too.

December 28, 200421 yr USGS and Pacific Tsunami Warning Center had warnings out in 15 minutes after the earthquake. Indonesia and Australia were contacted as they are member nations.

India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and many of the other countries have pretty good communications because of efforts in the last 5 years to get radios and phone lines to most parts of the countries. 643643 On Nightline they said that there are no warning systems in the countries lining the Indian Ocean because a tsunami in the Indian Ocean is considered so rare they didn't want to spend money on a widespread warning system. If this happened in the Pacific, the death toll would easily be ~75% less than what it is now because of the elaborate warning systems in Japan, USA, etc.
December 28, 200421 yr They are going to be spending the money know to bury those killed and for that simple system now. :plain
December 28, 200421 yr Death Toll up to 40,000. This has got to be one of the most if not the most devastating natural disaster ever.
December 28, 200421 yr They are going to be spending the money know to bury those killed and for that simple system now. :plain 643690 some of these areas dont exactly have money lying around to spend on a warning system. you take your chances.
December 28, 200421 yr Chances are this would be a bibical diasaster if we lived in that time seeing that the area was effected would have been about the size of the ancient world.
December 28, 200421 yr Because of the Tsunami we are losing 3 whole microseconds to everyday because the wave forces the earth to spin faster. And a few of the islands over there moved up to 60 feet from where they once were.
December 28, 200421 yr Stupid article that is kinda sorta related: New York Might Face Watery End New York Post | December 28 2004 December 28, 2004 -- It hardly raised a ripple when it was reported over the summer, but news that a tsunami could one day hit New York is suddenly getting a second look. Several months ago, geologists raised concerns that an unstable flank of a volcano in the Canary Islands off the coast of Western Africa could slide into the sea and send giant waves across the Atlantic at the speed of a jumbo jet. Within three hours, the wave could swamp the west coast of Africa. Within five hours, it could hit southern England, and within 12 hours, it could build up enough force to wipe out the U.S. East Coast, including New York, Washington, Boston and Miami, according to a British researcher. "Eventually, the whole rock will col lapse into the water, and the collapse will devastate the Atlantic margin," said Bill McGuire, of the Benfield Grieg Hazard Research Center. "We need to be out there now looking at when an eruption is likely to hap pen . . . other wise there will be no time to evacu ate major cities." McGuire said close monitoring of the site might give two weeks warning of the disaster. But that was before funding of the seismology project in the region dried up several years ago. Scientists at the time of McGuire's August study paid little attention to the warning, largely because the volcano in question has been dormant since 1971, even though it erupts every 20 to 200 years.
December 28, 200421 yr Author Your article Chewbacca is good but many geologists, volcanologists, and seismologists who are studying the area and past eruptions of that volcano say that it is most probable as seen from past eruptions that the landslide would be in pieces, therefore not causing a tsunami of that magnitude.
December 28, 200421 yr My family is originally from the Canary Islands, That volcano has not been over-active. They fear it may blow its top off like Mt. St. Helens and that it could collapse into the ocean causing a huge tidal wave and tsunami. That would be quite bad.
December 28, 200421 yr Author This is a plea to all of you: Please donate money or supplies to the humanitarian effort to help those affected by the Tsunami. It would be even better if you could organize one to happen at your school or workplace. Please look into this as I am going to follow the lead of my friend from Sri Lanka and try to start a donation drive.
December 28, 200421 yr I seriously need to find a way to speak to my friend but she's in a current state of uncommunicableness, no cell and probably no computer. And I don't have her house phone number lying around anywhere. This has easily been the worse natural disaster year in a long time, four hurricanes hit Florida, 10 typhoons hit Japan, floods in Haiti killed thousands and thousands of people, this Tsunami is probably gonna top at least 50,000 dead, and many other disasters. 643556 1. Good luck to your friend man. 2. This could be the worst disaster in centuries when it's all said and done, this is a disaster of Revelations-like proportions, and isn't really comparable to anything else that's happened recently (although i'm sure you know that). 643570 For number 1, thanks. Number 2, just go back 32 years to the cyclone that killed 100,000+ in Bangladesh for a worse natural disaster in terms of deaths, at the moment. Who knows how many people will never be found all across the Indian Ocean. 643577 heck, just 10-15 years ago there was one in bangladesh that killed more than a 100,000.

December 28, 200421 yr Even with a warning system, most of those countries would have seen similiar devastation. Those living off the land and on the sea dont exactly have the luxury to go to inland relatives or hotels. The death toll amongst the nicer areas might not be so high.

Plus, the quicker you clean up, the quicker you can get back to restoring the land for cultivation.
