December 30, 200421 yr I rarely post.... afraid to get flamed, but I was wondering who was going to be the Marlins catcher for 2005? Were we not going to sign Pual Loduca long term? And also Mike Redmond and Ramon Castro left for other teams, who is going to be our Back-up?
December 30, 200421 yr Welcome to the boards There's a good chance the Marlins are going to lock up Paul LoDuca for many years. As for backup, it looks like Matt Treanor and Josh Willingham will fight for the position in spring training.
December 30, 200421 yr You forgot to mention that the Marlins signed veteran catcher Mike DiFelice to a contract and will most likely be the back-up to LoDuca.

The pirates gave in to fan pressure and signed him long term for WAY over his vaule, then when he started to suck they couldnt trade him. Any remember CJ? Catchers should not be signed long term :confused

December 30, 200421 yr Albcuba , I dont know if were thinking of the same Jason Kendall ? But the one I know that was playing for the Pirates and now plays for the A's and posted these stats: G AB H 2B 3B HR RBI R BB K SB CS AVG OBP SLG OPS 147 574 183 32 0 3 51 86 60 41 11 8 .319 .399 .390 .789 is worth every penny pirates paid him .

The pirates surely regret signing him long term as it hand cuffed them for many seasons. The Marlins are VERY lucky that they were able to unload the massive contracts owed to Preston Wilson and CJ. The flexibility allowed by that move allowed for the subsequent run at Pudge and the overall competitive atmosphere of the 2003 season. I can?t imagine what would have been the case if we didn?t make that trade with Colorado. Would we have been able to sign Lowell and Castillo long term? Would we have only been forced to trade D Lee in that offseason? :whistle

However, Jason Kendall is arguably one of the better catcheers in baseball. Great eye, great speed (after the injury), High OBP, career .300 hitter, great leadoff hitter, etc.

December 31, 200421 yr You forgot to mention that the Marlins signed veteran catcher Mike DiFelice to a contract and will most likely be the back-up to LoDuca. 644894 Why's that? 645401 I think DiFelice has to be considered the front runner for the backup job. The only way I see it any other way is if Treanor really outplays him in Spring Training. Willingham shouldn't even be considered. No way is he a backup catcher. When he's on a ML roster, he will either be a starter or the first guy off the bench.. whether it's catching, first base, outfield, whatever.. I really don't think he'd be considered the backup catcher.
December 31, 200421 yr DiFelice signed a minor league contract and was invited to spring training. His defense and bat are not any better than Treanor. I think they head into spring training as equals.
December 31, 200421 yr DiFelice is a veteran with a lot more experience than Treanor, which McKeon values. Signing a Minor League contract doesn't mean anything. A lot of teams sign players to minor league deals with the intention of them making the 25 man roster. This just buys them some time in regards to making room on the 40 man roster, that's all.. I would actually love for Treanor to make it as the backup, but I think if you have two equal talents in Treanor and DiFelice, experience wins.
