January 1, 200521 yr (8) The Florida Marlins will stay put, but the Oakland A's and Minnesota Twins will start looking elsewhere. The Marlins will finalize their deal with the city of Miami for a new baseball stadium. They will then change their name to the Miami Marlins. However, the A's and the Twins won't be so fortunate. The A's will start serious negotiations with San Jose. The Twins will start looking at Las Vegas, Portland, Norfolk, or Monterrey, Mexico as a possible new venue. The Expos' relocation to Washington was Major League Baseball's first relocation in 33 years. Now that the genie is out of the bottle, there could be several more in the next five years. http://www.americandaily.com/article/6159 ? The Marlins: The Legislature will give the Florida Marlins the sales-tax break that the team needs to fill a $30 million shortfall in its stadium-financing plan. But the stadium deal may founder on the team's demands for millions more from the city of Miami and Miami-Dade for additional land and infrastructure costs. http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/news/...on/10517989.htm
January 1, 200521 yr No smile on my face. I still think the deal is queer. Or queerable. The cost over-runs will be insurmountable.
January 1, 200521 yr Well that is good news but I wish they would not change their name! I like Florida Marlins so much better than Miami Marlins :o :crying Well atleast they are staying in South Florida
January 1, 200521 yr Good news......I'll believe it when I start seeing construction though. 645883[/snapback] I believe the stadium deal will be achieved, but tend to agree that anything could happen until they finally break ground. Heck, the exact location of the stadium still isn't determined.
January 3, 200521 yr Unlike a majority of fans on this site. I welcome the name change to "Miami Marlins". I for one hate having states on the names of baseball teams. More so when there are two teams in the state. Adding Miami to the name will give the team a more retro feel. We will also have the history behind the name Miami Marlins from the minor league teams we've had. I welcome the change.

We already have the Miami Heat and Miami Dolphins, so why not the Miami Marlins? I agree as well that I don't like using state names for professional sports teams. My only wish is they would locate closer to the center of the tri-county area, but guess that is out of the question with all the $$$ the City of Miami is kicking in.

Aside from the horrible rent agreement with satan, the location of the stadium is terrible for baseball. It needs to be in the city, whether its miami, ft lauderdale etc.
January 3, 200521 yr Author I consider the name change as Miami (both city and Dade County) buying the naming rights to the team.
January 4, 200521 yr I don't mind the name change at all. However, I live in Stuart, and it's long drive down to PPS, and an even longer one to the Orange Bowl. That's why I was all for the Don King proposal to put the stadium in West Palm. I just wasn't sure how sincere Don King was about it.....I just wished they explored it a little more instead of just shrugging it off....
