January 7, 200521 yr A Millionaire looking to make a few extra bucks (by his standard) with a ball. Why no auction the ball for the Tsunami victims or something like that? 649947 This is not a 'few extra bucks', even by the standards of a multimilllionaire 5 times over. Bonds' 73rd home run ball went for well over 3 million dollars and this ball that Mientkiewicz has is undoubtedly worth just as much, if not more. Majority of people even consider it to be priceless and a large portion of the top 1% of America lives in New England and guaranteed at least a couple of them are Sox fans and willing to spend 10+ million. I agree, he could auction it off and donate the money to tsunami victims or something, but he's not. I'm sure if this drags out for more than a couple weeks he'll end up doing something like that though. 649977 Barry Bonds' 73rd homerun went for $405k. Mark McGwire's 70th went for $3 million. 649983 That's right, I got them backwards.

January 8, 200521 yr The guy is a loser...he has no right to that ball.? It's not like he is a fan.? If your boss tells you to give him the stapler in your office...you hand it over.? I'm pretty sure Josh Beckett isn't hoarding the ball from the Marlins WS victory.? He'll end up returning the ball...the backlash he will soon receive will be overwhelming...I guarantee it. 649926 He's not a loser, he's smart. Mientkiewicz has done nothing wrong, he was in the right place at the right time. Sure, he didn't do much to earn that ball, he got lucky... just like any fan that would have caught it in the stands. It says a lot about his character that he won't give the ball back to the Sox, however he is free to do whatever he wants with it because it is his ball. Also, Mientkiewicz already stated that he would gladly loan the ball to go on permanent display at Cooperstown but if someone wants to buy it from him (i.e. the Sox), they need to pay up. Period. The Sox don't want the ball in Cooperstown, they want it in their own personal "archives". The ball should not be in the hands of a private person, the hands of Mientkiewicz, or even in the personal archives of the Sox, it should be at Cooperstown and no place else. Mientkiewicz said he would gladly allow the ball to be displayed at Cooperstown where it could be on permanent display to the public, so what's the problem? 649980 The problem is that it is not his ball. Why is it his ball any more than it is Varitek's or Millar's or Damon's or Pedro's or the freakin' batbaoy's??? Just because he had it last? BS...the bal is the property of the Boston Red Sox...just like his uniform, his hat and anything else he is issued by the Red Sox to use. The exception would his bat or glove (if purchased on his own). He is not a fan...the ball did not go into the stands...it is entirely different than a home run ball. This guy is a greedy SOB...the baseball gods will get him in the end. :notworthy
January 8, 200521 yr I heard a good point on ATH today.... What if it had been a strikeout and Varitek had the ball? This wouldnt even be an issue.
January 9, 200521 yr I don't have a problem with Doug keeping the ball, its not like the greedy Sox organization really needs it that badly...i'm sure there's plenty of other items from the WS out there which they can use for public display purposes.

January 9, 200521 yr I don't know who has the rights to the ball, which is a completely different argument. But I think he should give it up. When I think about where the ball should end up, it should be with the Red Sox organization, so they can put it on display. So the fans can see it if they want to. It doesn't belong in the locker of Doug M., who had almost nothing to do with this victory. And I really don't think he'll need the extra money this fetches.
January 9, 200521 yr Josh Beckett said Doug should keep the ball in today's Palm Beach Post. 651345 i know he kept the ball from our championship not surprising
January 9, 200521 yr He should threaten to blow up the ball like they did with the bartman ball... :whistle
January 10, 200521 yr What ever happened to the ball that was in Beckett's glove during the last out of the 2003 WS?
January 10, 200521 yr What ever happened to the ball that was in Beckett's glove during the last out of the 2003 WS? 652007 it never left
January 21, 200521 yr *BUMP* MLB Baseball Lawyer: Cardinals own first right to ball; Doug Mientkiewicz last BOSTON -- Doug Mientkiewicz, call a lawyer. You're going to need one if you want to keep the baseball you caught for the final out of the World Series. Koh estimated the claimants would rank as: the Cardinals, since they were the home team; the Red Sox; major league baseball; and "then the guy who happened to hold it at the end of the game."
