January 7, 200521 yr Hello , I am a newbie in baseball world (and I have no much information on this sport because I live in europe). So, does anybody could tell me what are the most important position in this sport ? and second question, what are the average salaries by position ? thanks to be helpful and GO MARLINS GO !
January 7, 200521 yr You can't really point to one position and say its the most important. Good starting pitching is pretty vital to team success though. As for the average salaries at each position someone else can help you out with that.
January 7, 200521 yr Well it really depends on who you ask. There isn't a set most important position overall, but there are certain parts of the game that are more important than others. The 1-5 hitters in the lineup 9 out of 10 times will be better than the 6-9 hitters, the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd starters in a rotation are generally the best pitchers, and the reliever sent to finish the game, the closer, is almost always the best pitcher in the bullpen. Right Fielders tend to have the best arms, shortstops have the best range, third baseman have the quickest reflexes, center fielders are among the fastest, and the catcher is the best leader on the field. This isn't of course always the case, but they are the norms that generally hold true. Each position, however, is just as important as the other with the best player never going automatically going to one position (unless he is only the best hitter, than he DHs :lol ). Salary wise I'm not sure on the numbers, but expect Shortstops, Outfielders, First Basemen, and starting pitchers to make the most money. Third Basemen make alot as well, then second baseman, catchers, relievers, and bench players on average don't make as much because of more skill at other positions.

It's hard to say by position, but I would imagine the average salary of a starting fielder is about $3 million per year and the average starting pitcher at around $3.5. If anyone has better estimates, you should post it. And WELCOME TO THE BASEBALL WORLD!!
January 8, 200521 yr Obviously, pitching is the premier position and is paid accordingly. While entry level players ("rookies") earn the major league minimum of approximately $300,000 a year, eventually both position players and pitchers can earn upwards of $10 million a year depending on their skills and their importance to their club. In my mind, after pitchers come catchers. They call the pitches that pitchers throw, they need to know the strengths and weaknesses of opposing batters and the best pitchers in the world can't succeed without a good signal-caller behind the plate. It is also an arduous job, squatting, being involved in every pitch and is responsible for making numerous plays around homeplate. Baseball is a wonderful sport. There's numerous books regarding the game and lots of stuff online that will guide you through the intracacies of the sport. Good luck ! "Play Ball" !.

They either got bigger or slower or both, as 3b is a power position.
January 8, 200521 yr 99% of major leaguers began as pitchers, catchers, catchers or shortstops in little league. I'd expect one of those four positions to be the 'most important'.

January 8, 200521 yr If Kris cheats the most important position will be the one behind Missus Benson. :plain Had to say it, sorry. :mischief
January 8, 200521 yr Most consider catcher to be the most valuable defensive position, if that's what you mean.

They either got bigger or slower or both, as 3b is a power position. 650145[/snapback] I wouldn't say 3rd baseman don't have the best reflexes. On the contrary, they need to have excellent reflexes. They call 3rd base the "hot corner" for a reason. I've played 3rd base before and when that ball is hit by a right handed hitter, it's coming at you like a rocket. There is little reaction time. You have to rely on your reflexes or you might get knocked out. I think you may mean that they don't have the best range. Shortstops sometimes move to 3rd when they lose a step or two, but their reflexes are still there.
