January 26, 200521 yr I think one of the reasons people have this deception of the Phillies being stacked is that #1, Burrell isnt doing what he can do, after his .282/37/116 year in 2002. Without that piece, you only have two Good hitters in the lineup. Rollins, Polanco, Bell, Byrd are all average hitters at best, and now they have Lofton replacing Byrd whos jumped the shark. Lieberthal may be above average for a catcher but not production thats going to win you a substantial amount of ballgames. Thome and Abreu have been there only real problem starters on offense. Coming into 2003 there were huge expectations mainly because of the Rotation and the 3-5 in the order which at that time was supposed to be one of the best if not the best. #2 is that there rotation is just overrated. News Flash: Brett Myers sucks!! Alot of people have this impression that hes an impact in that rotation, because of a 4.43 ERA in 2003, big wup, the guy is an average pitcher. Millwood can't pitch outside of Mazzone, but hes gone now and replaced by um Jon Lieber, don't get me wrong is a good pitcher, but in no meens is an ace. Wolf and Padilla both had nasty seasons in 2002, but have shown no signs of the same pitcher the last two years. So pretty much you have an underachieving rotation whos overrated anyway, and either a bad pen, or an injury plagued one. The only way the phillies can contend at that level is if Burrell reapears and produces again. Padilla and Wolf both wake up and perform as they did in 2002, Myers ups his game and Lieber can dominate as an ace. That to me looks like a huge task and bigger burden to overcome than Any other team in the NL East besides Washington.

You have to give the guy more of a chance to develop. He has nasty stuff, and is only 24 or 25. For now as a fifth starter he is fine, and if he learns to pitch some day, he will be really good. I think he needs to spend a year with the Braves and Leo. As for the general idea of this topic on national media, we need to remember that these national media guys don't know very much about most teams. They need to cover the high profile, high-budget teams because that is what most people want to read about. These guys watch the Yankees and the Red Sox games. They know next to nothing about small to mid market teams, like the Marlins. They base their opinions on a couple of hours of perusing numbers, other articles, and headline news. They may watch 5 Marlins games per year and use that very small sample size to talk about the team. I am not blaming them; it is the nature of their business. I just pay very little attention to their analysis.
January 27, 200521 yr I would take the Marlins' pitching staff over the Phillies' anyday. All they did was lose Kevin Millwood, and nothing else.
