July 13, 200323 yr He's from Orioles Hangout.com I think. I've been talking with those guys ever since the Lee-Conine possible deal. I haven't asked them about Jason Johnson though. Maybe not the guy I was think of has a different screenname.
July 13, 200323 yr Author The reason I keep bringing him up is because several times I've read (online) in the Baltimore Sun that as good is he is, and appears to be a pretty fair 3/4/5 starter, the Orioles just don't seem to see a place for him in their future. Its a dream to think we'll get Ponson but here's this guy who seems readily available and has been mentioned in several rumored Orioles trades. I can find the Sun quote if I have to but its late and I'm being lazy.

July 13, 200323 yr Author Here's a quick thing I found at the Baltimore Sun, a newspaper BTW that covers baseball the way it ought to be covered. The Herald could certainly learn something from these guys. quote - "Starter Jason Johnson has good stuff but lacks a solid foothold in the Orioles' long-term plans." July 11th, Baltimore Sun Link

July 13, 200323 yr i dont think we really need Johnson Good for the future... plus you'll need someone next year cause I doubt Penny and Pavano will stay next year.
July 13, 200323 yr I too agree that Johnson's ERA will come down, much like Redman's has. I also think Johnson is a better pitcher than advertised, and with the right team with enough run support, could be a 15 game winner (12-15 anyway). Guy is solid. We could pick him up right now and plug him in as a spot starter or long relief guy then next year putting him our rotation. I also agree that we will deal Penny, and we should. He is a mediocre pitcher with very good talent, but he wont put it together until later in his career when he matures or has some traumatic event that wakes him up. I hope we keep Pavano, and I think that will depend on our success this season and cutting some fat off the roster (Lee, probably Castillo too).

Obviously, since I'm the guy who started the whole Johnson thing (my trade would be Lee, Bump and a third and maybe fourth player-prospects- for Conine and Johnson or Conine and Johnson and Ligtenberg) its pleased to se some here find value in such a deal. I've been pretty hard on Penny and deservedly so, but after the game Friday night, finally seeing some FIRE IN HIS EYES with the disputed call by the home plate ump, and then to see him shut them down after giving up the grandslam, I was pretty darned IMPRESSED. Considering Josh may have limited time for awhile, I don;t see trading Penny now unless it is one heck of a blockbuster deal.
July 13, 200323 yr Penny has great value, and could net a huge player or two in the right situation. I meant trading him in a totally different scenario, of course. Problem is, if you deal Penny in-season, you have to acquire an arm to take his place in the rotation. And dealing to replace Penny just to replace him is not wise. If you did deal him for a...drum roll please...left handed power hitter (Dunn, but I am frightened by his 100 Ks and .206 AVG), you would have to acquire a guy like Johnson in the deal to take his place. That seems to be putting the cart before the horse in a way. I agree, dealing Penny just to deal him is harsh, and he does have a lot of potential. It really comes down to who you are getting in return. As for the Jason Johnson thing, I was eyeing him as well when I heard about the Conine deal. I brought up Lightenberg as well, but when I read somewhere that Johnson was not in the Orioles plans, I immediately became interested in what this guy did. That is why I support what you have posted - because I am in the same boat!
