No question, I think he'll eventually get there. But as you said, he's struggling and getting older. I don't know if he'll have the longevity Franco and Lee had.

If Im not mistaken Rivera was still last years best regular season closer.

He's been fighting injuries pver the past coupe of years and whether the stats indicate it or not, just isn't as dominant as he usually is. Like I said, he'll probably pass them, but it seems like he's starting to run out of steam.

that's another thing. A few good years over some guys that have had as good or better years and then some? Explain that.

And it does matter whether or not they're good enough to start. When you have one guy who is a reliever because he wasn't good enough to start, vs. guys that would have been good enough to start but are relievers because they're even better, than yes, that does matter.

Yeah, I voted for Nen, but there's no doubt that Eckersley, Rivera, or Fingers should be #1. And besides those three, Nen, Smith, Hoffman, Wagner, Percival, Franco, Gossage have all had better CAREERS.

The only real argument you have (IMO) is that Gagne has re-defined the modern day closer role, going only 1 inning to close a game out. The old time guys pitched multiple innings per game, when necessary.
