Signing day

The Marlins signed eight players to one-year deals Thursday, including starting pitcher Dontrelle Willis. Willis' contract is believed to be worth $400,000. Others to sign were pitchers Ronald Belisario, Logan Kensing and Justin Wayne, catchers Matt Treanor and Josh Willingham, infielder Joe Dillon and outfielder Chris Aguila. All signed at or around the league minimum of $316,000.

Remaining unsigned on the 40-man roster are pitchers Nate Bump, Luke Hagerty and Ben Howard, and outfielder Miguel Cabrera. Starting Wednesday through March 11, the Marlins can unilaterally renew their contracts.

He's not eligible for arbitration until after 2006, so there is no reason to sign him long-term now. Why waste money on him if we have total rights over him? We'll sign him long-term after 2006. 7 year deal, $100 million.

If he's eligible after 2006, and his stock rises, then we'll owe him even more--no?
