just a question, sorry if it's silly -- but i have some questions on what you all get autographed.

 

I am sorry if I sound naive, but I can't seem to figure out what kind of pen you use on a baseball card....they seem so "shiny" what kind of pen writes on a card?

 

When we first got a bunch of autos on a ball we used a sharpie and i was told NEVER to do that because over time it fades.

 

We got a nice Mike Lowell in ink pen on a world series ball, so i guess ball point is good on a ball?

 

Also, do you only get one autograph on each ball? We have a ball with Choi, Alex, Ben Howard, Matt Treanor and Carl Pavano. someone told me it was dumb to get those on one ball unless you get the whole team.

 

We also have a magazine with a couple of others.

 

But i never know what is the right thing to bring and what kind of pen when seeking autographs.

 

Last question, my son caught a Cabrera foul ball at a game and we have put it away been waiting patiently to try and get it signed by only him. Should I just wait till he does a signing and just pay for it?

 

Hopefully, you experts can offer some good advice for us!!

On that Cabs ball .. go to spring training ! He'll sign it .. he signed mine Use baby powder to fix the shine on a card, so you can use a sharpie to sign on it. Sharpie's on balls aren't too bad, ball point pens are best. It's up to you, I've got JP & Miggie on one ball, Leiter & Stokes & ?? on another, it's how you enjoy it, ideally I'd like one per ball, but can't always afford that.

On glossy cards, Blue sharpies are probably the best. The Blue sharpie is considered a little more adhesive than black, thus shows up on a glossy card most of the time clearer than a signature in black sharpie. (from what i've heard, and personal experience)

 

 

About the Cabrera ball, if you dont happen to get a hold of him during the rest of Spring Training, there is a signing I saw coming up on April 9th click for details If you've ever been to a signing at that store, they're a lot of fun, I bet your son would be thrilled if you guys got a chance to stop by there. Rich Altman (the promoter at that store) is really nice about letting people take pictures or shaking hands with whoever is signing.

Also, make sure the ball is made of authentic leather, like the official MLB baseballs. It holds the ink better.

 

About a year ago, I got Miguel Cabrera's autograph using ball-point ink on a Foto-Ball (made of synthetic material), and now it's smudged and faded.

 

I've been using Official MLB balls ever since, and those work perfectly.

They jacked their prices up, during the last Cabrera signing it was only $29 for flats and balls and $39 for jerseys, bats and other items... and inscriptions were free.

Just use a blue sharpie on cards. Black sharpies tend to leave a "trail" right down the middle of the ink in the signature, kind of hard to explain but if you can ever compare a card signed by a black sharpie to a blue sharpie you'll immediately notice the differences. Also, it's easier to see the blue ink on most cards as opposed to black.

 

When you get a ball signed, use a simple blue Bic ball point pen, those are by far the best. I do agree that's it's a little pointless to have Choi, Seabass, Howard, Treanor and Pavano all on the same ball, if it was me I would have just gotten two balls and had Seabass sign one of them on the sweetspot and Pavano sign the other on the sweetspot. Never use a sharpie on a ball, i'd rather get no autograph at all than get one with a sharpie. Never get a ball signed using a black ballpoint pen, only blue.

 

Also, balls anything other than official major league baseballs are totally worthless. Just go onto eBay and buy a bunch of OMLB in bulk to use for signings and autographs.

 

I'd just go to the Cabrera signing to get that ball signed, and also players' signatures are generally a lot better when you're paying for them at an actual signing. For example, if you're at ST or something a player will just quickly scribble their name or sometimes only write their initials, but at a real signing you're guaranteed that the signature will be very nice and crisp.

I disagree. It's worthless to sell maybe, but could be worth alot to you. I know I got Cabs yesterday on a non-OMLB ball, it looks great. He also didn't cheap out on his autograph either, signed beautiful and of course included his #24 .. just great.

I bought a Marlins shirt last year and have just been getting different autographs on it since then. Also a couple years ago I got Cabera to sign a ball for just $10 he used a ball point pen and it still looks good.

I still have yet to get an autographed ball. I met Stokes and LoDuca, but I didnt have a ball. I really want Cabrera to sign a ball, but I didnt get to meet him that day.

Whatever makes you happy. I know that the first autograph I ever got was a Bob Natal autograph (what a blast from the past) and it means the world to me even though the ball would probably be worth more unsigned, lol.

 

Don't use sharpies on the balls, but on pics and magazines you really don't have any other choice (I recommend that you use whatever color stands out best, but as mentioned earlier, blue does tend to stand out better); other than that, just have fun, that's what it's all about.

I was just autograph hunting today over at the Orioles/Dodgers game in Ft. Lauderdale. Here are my tips:

 

-Always use ballpoint pens on official MLB balls. Sharpies will either soak into the ball, bleed, or fade over time.

 

-Sharpies are best used on baseball cards, hats, bats, etc.

 

-If you don't have a good regular pen available for use on a ball, try a thinpoint sharpie. They work pretty well on MLB balls. However, they bleed on cheaper balls, like those plain white ones.

 

One other tip, as far as Miguel Cabrera is concerned:

-I have seen a lot of success with people that have mailed cards for Miguel to sign to the Marlins' ST facility in Jupiter. Just write a small note with your card, politely asking him to sign it for you, and put the card, note, and a self-addressed, stamped envelope inside a bigger envelope. It should take 10-17 days for you to get your card back signed, from what I have seen.

Cool, I got Roberts in the parking lot after the game, I was the last person he signed for before he left.

First autograph I ever got was Gilbert Perreault at the 1990 HHOF induction ceremony, my favorite player of all time.

Conine signed my teal and white baseball with a pen, and spooney signed my orange floppy hat with a sharpie, but Spooney also signed one of those cheap foam mini baseballs with a sharpie for me and its been bleeding and fading alot, worst of all since the ball is so white the bleeding area shows alot.

Ballpoint on a leather baseball like the MLB ones. Fine-point Sharpie on synthetic material. Sharpie on cards.

 

As far as autos on one ball, it's personal preference. I've done both. In 97 I got all the key players on one ball. In 2003 I got them all on seperate balls. If you're looking to sel afterwards, seperate would probably net you more money, though again, that would depend on personal preference of the buyer.

Thanks guys for all of your replies!!! I knew I would get the right info from the experts here!! I know I do need to try and get that Cabrera signed. Maybe will give the Hollywood collectibles a shot.

 

It's just hard when you see them to grab quickly what you want signed - -but now I have some great tips from you guys!
