May 3, 200520 yr Yahoo! Sports Game Preview Al Leiter wasn't able to get the Florida Marlins a win in his first start for them since Game 7 of the 1997 World Series. His former teammate on another World Series team, Mike Hampton, did his part to make sure of that. On Tuesday, the left-handers meet again as the Marlins face the Braves in the opener of a two-game set between the NL East's two first-place teams. Leiter did not disappoint in his first game back with the Marlins on April 6, limiting the Braves to one run in 5 2-3 innings, his first outing for Florida since going six innings and allowing two runs in the Marlins' 3-2, 11-inning win that clinched the 1997 World Series title. Hampton, however, matched him April 6 with six innings of one-run ball, and both pitchers had long since departed when Chipper Jones homered on Nate Bump's first pitch of the 13th inning to give the Braves a 2-1 victory. Atlanta went on to take two of three in that season-opening series, and the teams have been in a battle for the division lead ever since. The Braves have won eight of their last 10, while the Marlins are 7-3 over the same span to come into this brief series tied atop the East. Hampton, who along with Leiter anchored the New York Mets' rotation as the team reached the World Series in 2000, will be looking to lead the Braves to their third straight win. Atlanta defeated St. Louis 2-1 on Sunday to pull even with Florida, an 8-6 loser at Philadelphia. John Smoltz scattered nine hits and four walks in 6 2-3 innings for his second win in a row, and the Braves took a series in which the three games were decided by one run. ``That was a great series,'' Atlanta manager Bobby Cox said. ``All three games were about as good as you would want.'' Cox has to be hoping that the tightly played series against one of the NL's top teams served as a warmup for this two-game set. The Braves will be taking on a Marlins team looking to get back on track after having its three-game winning streak snapped Sunday. Josh Beckett struggled in his shortest outing of the season, allowing five runs in the first inning of the 8-6 loss to the Phillies. Beckett had given up just five earned runs in 33 innings in his previous five starts, but lasted only two innings. His ERA rose from 1.35 to 2.57 -- below average for a Marlins team with a 2.54 ERA. ``Our pitching has been so good, you can expect these guys to have a bad outing once in a while,'' Marlins manager Jack McKeon said. The Marlins and Braves don't meet again until June 21-23 at Turner Field. Stat of the Day: Mike Lowell career vs. Mike Hampton: 13H, 4 2B, 6RBI, 1HR .394BA (33AB)
