McKeon made no apologies Sunday for the way he handled former Marlins starter Al Leiter. Now a New York Yankee, Leiter recently pointed to some unfavorable work conditions as to why he flopped in his Marlins return. Leiter said he's had more conversations with Joe Torre during his first three weeks with the Yankees than he had in three months with McKeon. He added that he didn't feel "those in charge" had confidence in him. "He doesn't have a good memory," McKeon said. "We'd sit and talk about the team or his pitching. He did most of the talking. ... I don't think that we should have had a long conversation. I let the guys play. I don't bother them." Leiter was 3-7 with a 6.64 ERA in 17 games with the Marlins, who designated him for assignment and traded him to the Yankees. Since arriving in the Bronx, Leiter is 3-3 with a 4.80 ERA in six games. ST. LOUIS -- Around baseball circles, Albert Pujols is regarded as being in a league of his own. Someday, baseball insiders believe Miguel Cabrera will be part of that elite fraternity of sluggers. Since his days in the Minor Leagues, Cabrera has drawn comparisons to the Cardinals' star first baseman. Justified or not, Cabrera is emerging, as evidenced by his already impressive Major League credentials. Ask the Marlins' rising star about Pujols and you get nothing but admiration. "He's unbelievable," Cabrera said. "What's different about him is he does everything. He's so smart as a hitter." Being mentioned in the same breath as Pujols is flattering for Marlins' 22-year-old left fielder. "It feels great," Cabrera said. "If you want to be like him, you have to do what he does. Albert Pujols is a great hitter because he works a lot. He works on his swing." As Cabrera emerges as one of the top hitters in the game, he now finds himself ahead of Pujols in batting average. The Marlins young star entered Thursday night's game hitting .348, second in the National League behind Derrek Lee's .357. Pujols is third with a .340 average. "I have a higher average than him, but that's not saying I'm a better hitter than him," Cabrera said. "He's the best hitter in the league right now. He's a great hitter. We can both use the whole field. When I talk to him, he tells me to take what the pitcher gives me. To use the whole field." Entering Thursday, Cabrera has played in 351 Major League games. A review of the two All-Stars' numbers through 351 games is interesting. Cabrera has a .304 career average with 68 home runs and 251 RBIs. Those numbers stack up favorably to the 25-year-old Pujols. Through his first 351 games, the Cardinals slugger had a .323 average with 79 home runs and 281 RBIs. Marlins hitting coach Bill Robinson says the great hitters like Cabrera and Pujols have tremendous bat speed, are able to recognize pitches and take the ball the other way. "When you look at bat speed, they both have great bat speed," Robinson said. "Pujols might be a little more advanced as far as recognizing pitches. At times, he probably is a little more patient. That just comes with him playing a lot more." Pujols also has unique strength. "Watch his work habits, his discipline at the plate," Robinson said. "I shook his hands [Wednesday] for the first time in a while. And they are gigantic. They are like vises. That's why he is so strong. That's why he can just muscle a bad pitch for a base hit. "Albert has played longer. He knows the league more. He trusts his swing a little more. But he's where Cabrera was when Miguel was 22." Harris clears the air: After Wednesday's 9-6 loss, veteran Lenny Harris aired out some frustrations in the clubhouse that were meant to be kept within the team. But Harris sounded off hollering while reporters were interviewing Jack McKeon in the manager's office at Busch Stadium. Shortly afterward, the media was asked to step outside for a few minutes. When the clubhouse opened, players went about their postgame business as if it was any normal night. On Thursday, Harris cleared the air about what went on. Foremost, the 40-year-old didn't want to give off the impression he was blasting his teammates. He caught word about his tirade from his wife, Carnettia, who was back in Miami. Harris said about 11 people called him inquiring about the incident. Harris told the Marlins beat writers Thursday that he didn't rip his teammates. He was trying to inspire them not to let two straight losses to the Cardinals have a ripple effect. "I didn't rip no team," Harris said. "I was trying to motivate my teammates. Let's not let this [losing] get out of hand. Let's not be disrespectful. Let's do what we've been doing. Because when you're losing, it can become contagious. That's it. "As a team, you want to keep your team together. We're on the road, and pretty much every series from here on out is going to count. That's what we have to have. That attitude. If we don't win, then you can say, you gave it your best. You don't want to say we laid down. If we get beat, they are going to have to beat us." Harris pointed out that he didn't know his words were in earshot of reporters Wednesday night. "It wasn't an interview that I wanted to have. It's confidential. It's a team thing," Harris said. "Some things about somebody close to you, you don't want everybody to know about it. That's the kind of relationship you have to have with your teammates. You have to have in-house. If there is one guy who wants to say something off the record, that's his business. I'm just trying to clear the air, and everybody agreed about it. Next time, I have to be under control the next time. The next time we might as well invite you all in, if it's going to be like that." McKeon has managed Harris a long time, including when they both were in Cincinnati. "He's not afraid to get on these guys," McKeon said. "Coming from a guy who has been around is necessary. He knows what it is to win. ... He's probably the one guy in that room who can say something that has some effect." Delgado update: Carlos Delgado continues to take anti-inflammatory medication to speed up the recovery of his sore left elbow. Out since July 27, Delgado is expected to test his elbow by taking some swings in the batting cages on Friday at Cincinnati. He didn't do any hitting on Thursday. "We'll see tomorrow whether he needs a day or two more," McKeon said. If the elbow still is sore, there is a chance the slugging first baseman could be placed on the disabled list retroactive to July 28. Touring new stadium: Unless the Marlins face the Cardinals in the postseason, Thursday's game will be the last time Florida faces St. Louis at Busch Stadium. Home of the Cardinals since 1966, Busch Stadium remains well preserved in downtown St. Louis. But next season, the club moves into a new park, located right next to Busch. Several Marlins front office personnel have been in St. Louis for the series and they've toured the new park. Getting the inside look at the new stadium were Marlins president David Samson, vice chairman Joel Mael, senior vice president and chief financial officer Michel Bussier, vice president of communications and broadcasting P.J. Loyello and general counsel Derek Jackson. The Marlins remain quietly optimistic that their quest for a new ballpark in downtown Miami, next to the Orange Bowl, will eventually be built. The Marlins are seeking a 38,000-seat, retractable-roof facility. In May, the proposed park received a setback when the Florida Legislature declined the request for a $60 million sales tax rebate. The Marlins continue to negotiate with the city of Miami and Miami Dade-County to come up with the final $45 million. Initially, the team was hoping to be in their new stadium for the 2008 season. Now, if the Marlins do get their stadium done, the earliest the park would open is 2009. The team has a series of one-year leases at Dolphins Stadium that runs through the 2010 season. When speaking of the Cardinals new park, Loyello said: "It's good for an organization to get new revenue streams. It's exciting for an organization to move into a new facility. It's exciting for them. When you walk around their new offices, everyone is excited about the move." Willis is people's choice BY CLARK SPENCER [email protected] Dontrelle Willis isn't above chatting it up with strangers whenever he's out and about in South Florida. But Willis said even he was taken aback by the number of people who called out to him Monday during a shopping trip at Aventura Mall, with many voicing their opinion that he deserved to start the All-Star Game in Detroit next Tuesday. ''It was something else,'' said Willis, one of four Marlins named to the National League team. 'It was weird. They were yelling across the mall, across the food court. They said `You should start.' I just said 'Thank you, I appreciate it.' '' While Willis has worthy credentials -- a 13-3 record, 1.89 ERA and four shutouts -- the final decision rests with St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa, who will skipper the NL All-Stars. And La Russa has a handful of candidates to consider for the honor, including Houston's Roger Clemens, Washington's Livan Hernandez, New York's Pedro Martinez, and La Russa's own Chris Carpenter. From that group, Carpenter has stats that most closely mirror those of Willis': 12-4, 2.60 and three shutouts. Clemens' 1.41 ERA leads the majors, but his 7-3 record pales alongside those of Willis, Carpenter and Hernandez (12-2). Martinez is 9-2 with a 2.74 ERA for the Mets. Most feel La Russa's decision, which is expected to be announced Monday, will come down to Willis, Carpenter and Clemens. Inside the Marlins' clubhouse, the sentiment is as clear as it was at Aventura Mall: Willis and nobody else. ''No doubt about it,'' Marlins pitcher Ismael Valdez said.
