Leiter Holding Us Back
For the few of us who have actually seen leiter pitch often enough. Yesterday b4 the rain delay his balls werent missing by much. In fact many of them could have been strikes in other games (depending on the ump). Some of the pitches called ball in the first 2 innings were later being called strikes, b/c the ump widened the strike zone for some reason around the 5th inning. Furthermore, 2 of the hits were bloop singles, s*** happens. Not walking pratt (who was 10 for 19 lifetime against leiter) to pitch to wolf was bad managing. Leiter's cutter was cutting in nice on right handers. To me yesterday leiter showed signs of returning to normal. The rain delay totally killed whatever momentum he was gaining, making it his 2 start that has been weather affected. So by lookin at just the numbers for yesterdays game, you miss the intricacies of pitching that can only be observed by paying attention the actual game. 784340 With Leiter this year it is one excuse after another. Just for once it would be nice to see a solid performance. The situation reminds me a lot of Oliver last year. There was always someone, or something else to lay the blame. I'm not ready to give up on him yet, but geesh I wish he would give us some reason to be optimistic. 784352 What do yo umean you havent seen a solid performance?! Have we been watching the same games? Hes had 2 very solid performances one against the mets at shea and one against the padres. Is it his fault that he didnt get run support in either b/c he was going against martinez and peavy? 784378 OK. If you break it down he's had two quality starts...as you mentioned against the Mets and Padres. Yet even in the Padres start he struggled with control and walked 5. He also pitched a decent game against Atlanta. But 2 quality starts out of 9 appearances just doesn't cut it for a guy who is the highest paid starter on the team. There can be little argument he isn't performing to his contract. 784408 I dont argue that he hasnt been playing to his salary. i'm just saying that hes shown signs of light (light-er even ) All im syaing is lets give him time, i will be the first to ask for change if this continues to the break. But he hasnt been horrible at all times, hes been inconsistent, which is better than just bad 784416 you want to give more time???what the hell are you crazy??for what so the meaninfull games that he pitches we lose cause of him....man i don't like the guys i've said before i'll give up to the allstar break...if by then he doesn't improve realese his ass and give his job to valdez...

Attention People Who Read This Forum
He didn't start the '97 off well either? That was 8 years ago. He is now 40 years old. Leiter has an ERA of 8.06 in May. In 9 starts this season he has 2 that qualify as quality starts. Three games (33%) he has not made it through 5 innings. He is averaging 4.77 innings per start. He is averaging 1.69 runners per inning, 1.88 in May. Only Jennings, Wright and Wilson have higher ERA's in the NL and two of those guys pitch in Coors, the other has an arm injury and pitches in Cincy. I agree that people that throw players over the edge on a whim are wrong, but just as wrong are people that won't face facts. Will Leiter turn it around? I guess he could. I don't think he will. But it is a valid discussion to ask if a change needs to be made. Fact is most of you were all over Darren Oliver when he had similar problems. Shame on all of you that think a post telling members to shut up is awesome. I guess that's what ya want though so I leave you with this....Shove It! 784391 i agree :lol

Leiter Holding Us Back
Leiter certainly needs to improve himself. At this point, if we have an off day and we're gonna skip a pitcher, keep Moehler in and skip Al. 784346 i like your idea...skip his turns

Leiter Holding Us Back
struggling pitcher, 33 minute rain delay. Lets use our brains once in a while. 783647 does it really matter if you give him the lead??? the guys sucks plain simple...

Leiter & Kensing
I think the Marlins are holding on to him, until Valdez comes back. Moehler will difinetly stay as a number 5, maybe 4. 784056 i hope your right cause this guy is terrible....
-
Leiter & Kensing
Crazy idea here, but why not trade Kensing and send Leiter back to the minors? 783738 You're giving up on Kensing already? 783853 yes the sux......bring him up when he can actually contribute to tthe team not hurt it...

Things that we can do...
Considering that the Marlins are basically the big dogs of the station now, they should do more to improve interest of the team through the airwaves. I mean it is sickening beyond belief to hear Dolphins talk on May 25 when the Heat are still in the playoffs and the Marlins season has only really begun. 782737 i agree....its damn shame the crap they gotta put up with...

Things that we can do...
placing the blame on WQAM is going a bit far . . .Not saying they don't contribute. The quality product is there, and every sports fan in South Florida should have a clue about that. This is just a slow process where the fan base is being built 782710 You're entitled to your opinion, and I agree there are other factors, but to ignore the absence of a baseball sports forum for spontaneous baseball talk has to be right up there among the two or three reasons why baseball doesn't get more respect in this market. As for bombarding QAM for a day its a fool's errand (not that who posted that suggestion is a fool, it's just not going to change things there). Not to mention the on-air talent have no interest in either taking your calls or developing a dialogue regarding the sport. And while there is some Marlins talk on 790, the fact is for the most part it's only with Boog, Joe Rose has neither the passion required or the interest in the sport although I do give him credit for not ignoring it completely, OJ is waste of time for baseball fans, and LeBatard's (who I have forgiven for his past Marlins-related sins) show is more ego-driven than sports oriented. At some point the Marlins are either going to draw a line in the sand with QAM or move elsewhere to (pardon the pun) be the big fish. They cannot continue to allow themselves to be treated like second class citizens on their broadcast home station. 782733 i agree.... :thumbup ...but i disagree with on the second class citzizens their treating us like we don't exist in their shows...only when the announcers recap everything they remeber about our team...if its not for that the talk in qam would be dolphins, miami hurricanes, heat, panthers and then marlins...god i dislike this station....
-
Things that we can do...
Well then its up to fans like us to flood QAM and other sports talk shows around the area with Marlins talk. Maybe if we do that, more people will jump on and we can get a real baseball talk show here. 782714 790 does stuff about the marlins all the time and we don't have a contract with them...WTF and if you do call and try to talk baseball with that idiot madich hell cut u off and start talking about the freaking dolphins....SCREW WQAM :censored
-
Things that we can do...
The biggest single impediment, at least in my mind, to creating fan interest in the Marlins is the local media, and most significantly, the lineup at WQAM, the flagship of the Marlins radio broadcast network. There isn't another major league baseball city in America where baseball (and the home town team) is treated so dismissively. To have a football-loving, baseball-hating neanderthal like Jim Mandich doing drivetime, to me, is one of the root causes of the Marlins attendance woes. From Fatberg to Neil Rogers to Howard David there isn't a chance in a million that anyone passionate about baseball would waste one second listening to them. In losing the Dolphins, QAM has decided to saturate their lineup with Dolphins-talk in hopes of minimizing the value of 790's contract. The effect of that decision is to virtually exclude the Marlins and makes it impossible for fans to talk the sport. Spend a minutes at WEEI in Boston and you'll see what I'm talking about. Until the Marlins can find a media home where they are the predominant attraction that fills their day with baseball talk (at least during the season), it's going to be more of the same in attendance and general fan interest. 782703 your right about that...i'm starting to think they should move to 790 as well cause of that idiot madich talks about is the stupid dolphins. the other idiot goldberg talks about his stupid horse races and the biggest idiot of them BIG o talks about the miami hurricanes. who gives a s*** about a college team??i sure as hell don't... i thought we have a contrat with them so they can talk about our baseball team.... not those loser dolphins that they lost the contract from...i hope the dolphins go 0-16 SCREW THEM...

Article by Todd Jones on Cabrera and Willis
Manny tries in the field, he just isn't very good. Miguel exhorts as much effort fielding as he does picking his nose. I think is unfair to say Pujols is better deffensively than Cabrera. Pujols is below average everywhere, while Cabreras might be a below average outfielder, but he is deffinitely a very good infielder. Pujols is an above average first baseman 780484 He is a very average first baseman. 780578 I could have sworn there were talks of him winning a gold glove this year 780579 yea right with derrick lee in the NL he won't win it TRUST ME ON THAT... 780584 and? Derrek Lee has 1 gold glove 780595 and will continue to get it over pujos any time..between pujos and him defensively i'd take D.lee any day he is way better than pujos... 780611 You do realize when DLee won the gold glove, Pujols was primarily a LF right? 780692 yea i know that...but your comparing him to a player that's improve every year offensively and and in my opinion the best first baseman defensively in the NL and probably ML...

Lowell To Dodgers?
They don't have anyone capable of taking over at third for us. 777722 No, but we do. His name is Miguel Cabrera. Then we could just move Niner to LF. Edwin Jackson and Carrara or Brazoban would be a good deal for us. 777723 Dude, don't you get it! Lowell is the face of this team. Whenever you think of the Marlins you think first of Lowell. Yes, and then Cabrera, I give you that. But Lowell is the hometown hero who accepted less money to stay with the marlins, who played hurt during the WS in 2003, who bleeds teal even after getting hiy by a foul ball. It is bad PR to move such a guy to another team. He is just in a slump. You don't see that Yankees looking for "logical trade partners" when Jeter or ARod goes in a prolongued slump, and believe me, they all have. He will come out of it because he is a player of the same caliber. 777730 Niner is the face of the team, even if he is on the bench every game. 777795 :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol ...but that's the truth...

Lowell To Dodgers?
By the way, Willy Aybar (who plays 3B, I think) is raking in AAA: 522 SLG, 348 BA. He also walks a litte (403 OBP) and is listed as only 22 years old. (Although he's probably closer to 25). I'd trade Lowell for Aybar and a mid-level lefty pitching prospect (e.g. Derek Thompson -- 39K in 35 2/3 innings, 4.04 ERA for AA Jacksonville) 777766 hell no i wouldn't trade him at all...after he commited himself to us for 3 more years..my answer is still hell no we can't trade him...bad trade if it happens...

Who the heck wrote this article anyway? 777725 miami herald it says here.... 777737 The Herald has writers. 777742 oops me bad... heres the quote In Sunday's Miami Herald sports section, on page 2 under South Florida Sports Buzz, some managers and genral managers around baseball say that the Dodgers would be a very real partner in a Mike Lowell trade. Barry Jackson wrote it.... :thumbup
