  1. What's wrong with all of this sport writers and sports radio talk host?? is this the best they can do? I mean I hear nothing but negative comments and articles about this team, it's unbelievable! they give this team no credit whatsoever, they've won like 9-10 games in a row in ST, yeah like everyone says it's just ST but heck, at least give these kids credit, they've showed cojones. I just heard that retard Kimbo Camper on WQAM that this team will win like 40+ games the most, and that the team won't be the same without Castillo, Delgado, LoDuca, etc. We had all those big money players last year and we choked, totally underachieved. So why not talk about a young team that's gonna be fun to watch and I'm sure will put more runs in the scoreboard than last years team. I'm sure they have a shot at .500 and possibly winning 70+ games, give some optimism goddamit. I agree whole heartedly with that comment...I actually sent Hyde an email about this article and said why is that the S. Florida media both on radio/tv and in print not support the fish....did he really have to point out trading Dontrelle a few days prior to opening day. I think not....and then on Mad Dog Mandich....he is pointing out that there are no Marlins fans - no talk of baseball as we approach opening day....I wanted to call but could not get a cell signal....I am so fed up with the DOLPHINS commentators - they rule the sports arena down here and care not for baseball or the marlins.
  2. I'm sorry if I'm offending anyone, but doesn't this sound the slightest bit fishy to anyone? I'm not trashing grass roots movements, or the belief of political efficacy, but this woman seems to only be out for herself. As Marlins2003 said earlier, it appears she's just campaigning for a job somewhere down the line. I mean, here's the gist of the meeting from the reports from those who went: "Let's set up a meeting with Wayne Huizenga, we should have the mayor, possibly the governor, some Marlins representatives, and...me!" No one else finds that the slightest bit off? So what? She's spearheading it, so she can make herself one of the key figures. So long as she's trying to get the Marlins to stay in South Florida I couldn't care less if she also wants a job. If anything, it's a strong incentive for her to succeed: if she gets the Marlins to stay, she gets a job. No, see, I think you missed my point. What I meant was this: As an organizer of a grass roots movement, without experience in government, no degree demonstrating a specialty in the field or really any involvement with any of the parties at a professional level, she brings nothing to the table. What the goal of any "save the Marlins" movement should be is making it evident enough that this is a big deal to the voters...meaning the focus should be on all local and state politicians, not Huizenga, not the Marlins. There need to be lists pages long with countless names on them presented to every elected official or hopeful for the 2006 elections. That's the goal, not sitting in a board room with Huizenga and Loria. How seriously would she be taken, or, more importantly, what would she bring to the table? I'm not at the point in saying that her heart is in the wrong place, but I seriously question where her head is... Since obviously you were not there - you do not know what we discussed as a task force. We are meeting with the Dade County Commission to put our cause on the upcoming agenda for a commission meeting. We formed an official PAC (political activity committe) to be recognized by the government. Based on suggestions from the rep of Carlos Alvarez (Miami-Dade Mayor's Office) we go to this meeting and see what they suggest - if they require to see 100k petitions from taxpayers then our REAL work starts. But it may not be necessary to jump through this hoop until told to. We discussed shirts, and bumper sticker designs, we discussed volunteering on weekends and such gathering voters petitions, email campaigns to the local politiicians... And for the record - she is more than qualified as she sat on the City of Miami Sports and Exhibition Committe and brought back the Grand Prix of Miami and several other sporting related initiatives. The main thing that ties us all together is love for the Marlins. Miami lost the Orange Bowl, the Fl . Panthers, the Orange Bowl parade....if we do not speak up on this, they will allow the Marlins to move out of the state when a viable option does rear its head in whatever state that may be....Vegas is not happening... But the movement is trying to involve local and state politicians and what you're mentioning is part of the plan. If her experience in leading this kind of an effort is limited, well, it's important to note that she is trying to involve as many people as possible and certainly welcoming those whose areas of expertise will be beneficial. It would be a problem if she was one of those arrogant types who think they always know best. For example, the person I mentioned I put her in touch with, has some experience in dealing with local and state politicians and can help in other areas as well. Well, I sent her the info last night and they have already communicated and plan to meet. Every movement needs a leader and, let's face it, she's the one who stepped up. Trying to start something like this is daunting and difficult when you have to balance a full-time career and personal obligations as well as I'm sure many of us are keenly aware. She can't do it alone and knows it. I do not believe she would be adverse to constructive criticism. So what? She's spearheading it, so she can make herself one of the key figures. So long as she's trying to get the Marlins to stay in South Florida I couldn't care less if she also wants a job. If anything, it's a strong incentive for her to succeed: if she gets the Marlins to stay, she gets a job. Prinmemito, I agree and was trying to make that point some time ago. If she does or doesn't have personal ambitions, who cares as long as our goal is the same! Believe me, I have met with her one on one and she is devoted to this cause and our goal of saving Baseball in S. Florida...that is why I am coordinating Broward efforts to do the same thing....we are working together on this, but since she is in Miami, I am trying to assist in Broward - my background is not in politics but as a fan of baseball and the Florida marlins - I am an organizer of events and have coordinated several projects for charities in S. Florida, and professional I am a Tax Accountant for a major corporation in S. Florida.
  3. It seems the Marlins and MLB really don't have better alternatives than South Florida. The Marlins have taken the wrong approach and instead of working to establish strong connections within the community and local governments they're playing the game of brinkmanship and alienating themselves. I suppose we'll see soon enough whether their approach will work. Otherwise as fans we may be looking at low-budget payrolls for quite awhile. MLB is expecting DC to fully pay for the stadium and then agree to favorable lease terms. That is a significantly better deal than the Marlins have been offered if it happens. The Marlins have not really offered to put much cash up front, but are willing to pay for all cost overruns. Other cities expect the Marlins to contribute a significant amount of money as well. So the Marlins may threaten to relocate, but it appears from these reports they'll have just as difficult a time coming to an agreement with San Antonio, Portland or Las Vegas as they are having with Miami. I do not believe the media gets the stadium deal - either that or they are miscommunicating it completely. The whole deal that was almost agreed upon last year - DOES NOT GIVE THE OWNERSHIP THE STADIUM - the City of Miami/Miami Dade County would have owned the stadium. The media kept pushing the idea that giving owners a free playground is wrong. That was not the deal that was in place - it was a partnership between the local government and the ownership - afterall the ownership is putting up $192m of its own money which would have come mainly in the form of lease payments on the stadium. Last year the sales tax rebate - which also was not communicated very well in the media - was almost a done deal - according to the mayor Carlos Alvarez' camp - all it needed was a nudge of support from the Senate - our dade county state representation did nothing to voice the need for the stadium and therefore the rebate is killed. To explain the rebate - simply the money that is spent on construction, materials, etc all the sales tax is rebated or not paid to the State for x number of years to a tune of $2m per year (think it summed to $30m). The point was not made that without the rebate the money would not be spent in FL anyways - at least it is a revenue stream for the state of Florida and for the dade county. Whatever happened to the money earmarked for stadiums and the like from the Dade County Bed Tax - that money is already sitting there and just needs a push to allocate to the stadium. We as citizens of the S. Florida area need to have our voices heard - do not allow the media and politicians kill baseball in S. Florida. Citizens to Save Baseball in S. Florida is a step in the right direction to give the fans a voice that WILL BE HEARD.
  4. I was there tonight. There were about 40 people there and I was the youngest one. It's not official yet but she said that the next meeting will be in about two weeks and they plan to meet at Conine's restaurant. Is it going to be the day of the Heat playing the Pistons for the souls of the universe or something? No it will not be - I am making sure that the Broward meeting does not conflict with any other sporting venue for that night. Honestly, with the Heat playing and the Rose Bowl - the organizer, Marianne did not know about them when setting the meeting date. How many fans do we have on the board from Broward County - this would be a good poll to set up to see where everybody is from ( Dade, Broward, Monroe, Palm Beach, or other). I am hoping that we will have a good turnout at the Broward meeting - details will be posted soon just working on the date and time. Until next time...
  5. I was there tonight. There were about 40 people there and I was the youngest one. It's not official yet but she said that the next meeting will be in about two weeks and they plan to meet at Conine's restaurant. Rachel - I belive I saw you there - perhaps with a family member? I was the one who spoke up about the Tricounty Coalition to Save Baseball. I was the lone rep from Broward from what I could tell. It was good to see support from all ages, sex, and races. Tealfins, were you wearing a blue shirt and glasses? Yeah, that was me...
  6. I was there tonight - I am making arrangements with Conines Clubhouse to hold our next meeting in the next week or so. I will make sure that there are no conflicting sporting venues held that night. We had just under 50 there in Kendall. Though I am not his- panic nor do I speak Spanish, they did interpret for me the gist of the conversation. We formed a PAC (Political Action Committee) known as the "Citizens to Save Baseball in S. Fla". The leadership will meet with the Dade County Commission to put our cause on the agenda for an upcoming meeting. Depending on how they address our existence will determine the next step. It is possible that we may need to do some grass roots petitioning for registered voters. But that will be determined in the near future. A news media camera taped the meeting and a final press release announcing our PAC existence - that will be aired on Sunday at 7pm on Channel 22 (I believe that is WDLP). We did hear some ideas as to some action steps - the main one being to get the county to recognize us. Another key is to align ourselves with Huizenga's camp in backing his plans for a "Citywalk" type of establishment around the stadium. Currently this is being held up by zoning issues for the land around the stadium. If we show our support for his need, a favorable stadium situation is in the mix then we will support his cause publicly. Interesting to hear that a rep from MLB (Bob Dupuy) met with Huizenga last week. The only reason MLB would meet with Huizenga is to see what can be done to save baseball in S. Florida. His plans for a shopping/restaurant complex around the Dolphins stadium can be a saving grace for baseball as well. On that note, several of us will be arranging a meeting with Huizenga - hoping to get a media type and a player from the Marlins to join in our efforts (Lenny Harris was mentioned as a native Floridian who attended HS locally). Several lunch trucks are going to have banners with a Fish chewing the NY symbol - and the words Remember 2003 - We need a stadium - Save Baseball for S. Florida - or something to that effect. I will be posting details on the Broward County meeting in the next day or so - we hope to meet soon. Hopefully we will have more than the 50 in Miami - granted this was not the best night considering the Heat played (awfully) and the Rose Bowl (great game) but it is a start in the right direction. Until next time...
  7. Why does this matter? Todd Jones had ONE good year and hes been around for like 10 so it doesnt matter. hes going to flop next season in detroit and we all will laugh about this. oh and maybe another reason is because JONES is like pushing 50 now and the roster average age is 23, we obviously just wanted to go younger. Jones is gone let it go. If that's the case, then why is Lenny Harris still on the bench? That spot would be better suited for someone who can assist by playing the field or pinch hitting in more than a few chances per week. Nothing against Lenny - he has been awesome off the bench, but with the team makeup this year - he is out of place. Why doesn't he fill in as a coach like Mordy. By the way, is Mordy still managing in our minor league system?
  8. Let's get some bodies out there, no excuses, especially if you are saying it is too far I'm coming down from Broward to show my support. Agreed - I am coming down from Davie to show mine and we will hold a meeting in Broward in the next couple of weeks. It will be at night and most likely on a weeknight. Details to follow...
  9. I belief her efforts are sincere. I am in communication with her as well and am working on setting up a Broward venue for a similar strategizing meeting. Does anybody have any connections to area hotels in Broward county, or large activities room at a condo? somewhere where we can meet and discuss some solutions and an action plan. More details to follow soon... This effort should be a tri-county initiative and the team name should remain the Florida Marlins. The fans come from all 3 counties so why not get the support from all three counties - form a tricounty sporting authority. Perhaps come up with a penny tax in the tricounty area or something along those lines to support the stadium initiative.
  10. I was surprised how low he predicted AJ's value to be... What about Moyer or Rogers on one year deals to be the #3 starter? Can anyone say "Leiter" - it has a similar feel to it...especially in Rogers case as a 41 yr old leftie with media problems.
  11. How about Jesus Sanchez - he was a little lefty with plenty of spunk...Used him for pinch running alot too.
  12. So far we have some interesting names in the mix: Girardi - propped up as the next big mgr in the league - worked under Torre, young, bright baseball mind, and a former catcher. Freddi - former Marlins coach, knows some of the team, speaks Spanish, worked under Cox - also a promising future manager Macha - positive exp in Oakland with a payroll pinched A's team - might be more expensive then above two One I would like to have considered is Alan Trammell from the Tigers - he was stuck with a very weak team and weak pitching - that team is moving in the right direction under Dombrowski personnel manuevers and now with Leyland - expect Dombrowski to make some veteran acquisitions in the offseason. But Trammel was well liked by his team and maybe a new surrounding and our pitching staff will do him good. What do u think?
  13. There were 2 outs, you send the runner. Jeff Cox didn't mess up, Cliff Floyd just made a really nice play. If you want to blame someone for the loss, then blame JP, our leadoff man who went 0-6. THE END. 956991[/snapback] That is a good point - he was doing ok the past week at the bottom of the lineup, why is he back in leadoff? I will tell you why - Jack just loves to tinker with a good thing...his system is if we won with what we had yesterday, must be good.
  14. How many runs have been killed by Jeff Cox waving guys or stopping them at 3rd...I don't care who was running from 2nd - could have been Pierre - but they were dead at home with Floyd leading in OF assist from LF. Not sure who the manager is next year - but Cox has got to follow Jack to the pastures. I know that is not the main reason for our loss - but he has contributed to quite a few IMO.
  15. That sounds like a great idea....been meaning to check his place out...what better reason !!!
