Spring infield practice aids Miami Marlins reliever Carter Capps with throwing motion By Clark Spencer [email protected] The Marlins had reliever Carter Capps take infield practice during spring training in order to fix his delivery. Now that the hard-throwing pitcher has ironed out the kinks, the Marlins are reaping the benefits. “He’s got his delivery back, his confidence level is back, and certainly his stuff speaks for itself,â€ Marlins general manager Dan Jennings said of Capps, whom the Marlins obtained from Seattle over the winter for Logan Morrison. Capps, who started the season at Triple A New Orleans as he continued to work on his delivery, has been lights out in his two outings since being called up to join the bullpen. In four innings of work, he has struck out six and not allowed either a hit or a walk. On Saturday, he threw two pitches that registered 100 mph and another that hit 101, bringing oohs and ahs from the crowd. Capps’ pitching mechanics fell out of whack in Seattle last season, and he gave up 12 home runs in just 59 relief innings. The Marlins gave up Morrison for Capps, confident they could correct his flaws. “Mechanically, he had slowed his tempo a little bit and got a little more [throwing] across his body,â€ Jennings said. “This spring, we were able to go get video. They looked at it and one day, [pitching coach Chuck Hernandez] went out and hit him ground balls at shortstop, let him pick them up and throw across, just to find his natural throwing slot.â€ When Capps was sent to New Orleans, he continued to work on his delivery with Zephyrs pitching coach Charlie Corbell.

I couldn't agree more with you, Silver Bullet 1929. Marmol was only one reason why we lost last night. I was at the game last night. Even though there were lots of Dodger fan , there was a vibe present in the stadium that I had not felt since 2003. Every Marlins fan was going crazy when we had the bases loaded in the later innings. People has nervous smiles in anticipation of a fantastic comeback walk-off win. Even though we lost, it was a fantastic game with plenty of excitement and drama that only a true sports fans (like the people in this blog) can really appreciate. If this year's team can give us more games like this it will be a very enjoyable season. Imagine if we win a few of these nail biters! Guys, as understandable as the Marmol hate is right now... Stanton lost us this one when he had three horrendous swings in the 8th... In the 9th, Yelich lost us this one when he couldn't put a ball in play and Dietrich lost us this one when he swung at a 3-1 pitch to let Chris Perez off the hook... In the 10th McGehee lost us this one when he grounded into a double play and Ozuna lost us this one when he was swinging for the fences like a cartoon character with a man on third.... I'm furious at Marmol myself but seriously there's a lot of blame to go around. We were one pitch away from this one multiple times. We gave this game away.
  3. Now that the offense and starting pitching seem to be back on track, the bullpen is the obvious weakness. I don't trust anybody to hold a one run lead except for Cishek and maybe Ramos. I think Marmol should only be used in the 7th or 8th innings if we are winning or losing by more that 4 runs. I also don't trust our lefties (Dunn and Hand). Capps looked pretty good a few days ago. Should he be our 7th inning guy followed by Ramos in the 8th? Or is Capp's command still questionable?
  4. Stanton is as good as gone after this season. He has said nothing in the past two years that makes me think wants to stay in Miami. I hope he has a banner season so that his value will peak, then he can be traded to a contending team with deep pockets for several of their top prospects. The thought of Stanton leaving the Marlins won't be so painful every time I see him swing and miss at a low and outside curve ball for the third strike.

I have a feeling the the Marlins are still upset about LoMo's outspokenness. After being asked to restrain himself, he failed to stop bad mouthing the front office a few years ago and was sent to the minors for a couple of weeks for running his mouth a little too much. LoMo then took the Marlins to some sort of players union complaint board. I think there is still some degree of bad blood between them. Who knows how much of a problem it may be causing in the clubhouse if LoMo is speaking badly about the team to his teammates or others. And now that he is not playing as well as they hoped, they planned to get rid of him once the 2013 season was over. It showed by the Marlins making a play for Abreu, Napoli, and now Jones. It didn't surprise me. Such a brilliant, unsubstantiated post that you had to repost it twice, eh? And for what it's worth, I read something from one of beat writers how the FO loves Morrison's work ethic.

  8. I know he doesn't have protection in the line up and that it is very, very early in the season, but with the exception of his last at bat (he hit a nice double) Stanton has looked totaly lost at the plate in the first four games. He needs to significantly improve and consistantly put up big power numbers while cutting back on strikeouts before the Marlins will be willing to offer him the huge contract needed to keep him here long term. By the same token, if he doesn't prove himself this year or next, no team will be willing to offer the kind of return everyone is speculating the Marlins should ask for him. Hopefully he will get it turned around, and whether we keep him or trade him, the Marlins will benefit either way by having one of the greatest power hitters baseball has ever seen, or by getting a ton of top prospects for him.

Why would anybody buy season tickets unless they're premium seats? Go on stubhub and pay nothing to sit anywhere in the building... For the 2013 season there will be very few season ticket holders and thus, very few people will be putting up ticket for sale on Stubhub.
  10. I can't get excited about anything concernig the Marlins these days. Any way I look at it, the 2013 season and beyond are going to be a painful. We will hear how Miggy, Reyes, Hanley, JJ, Anibal and the others are doing while we watch our triple A team struggle. I don't really see any end in sight. No respectable free agent is willing to come here. It's really tough being a Marlins fan right now. What a difference a year makes!
  11. I'm glad we got rid of Buck. I don't mind that we got rid of Johnson. Great guy, but he had been going downhill for the past two years and had a huge contract. Don't really mind that we traded Burhle. He ate up a lot of innings but a dominant pitcher he is not. I think Boni is a fine player that could play several positions with a great attitude and speed. We should have keep him. What really pissed me off is that they traded Reyes. Trading Jose Reyes makes me think that the FO is not going to go get significant free agents now to fill the huge holes we have. Then again, Reyes may have been the player Toronto demanded to get the deal done. If this is the case, I will reserve judgement on this trade until I see what they do the rest of the off season.
  12. It depends on what the FO does in the off season. If they make a great effort to improve the team like they did last winter, I will renew. If they make only relatively minor improvements, I won't. Simple as that.
  13. I can't stand to watch the Marlins live anymore, knowing that I am investing 3 hours of my time to watch them lose and suffer along the way. So I record the games. I keep track of the score on my phone every half hour or so while I do something else. If the Marlins score, I fast forward the DVR and watch that. How frustrating! We waited all winter and then all spring for this season to begin. We were full of hope and anticipation for the inaugural season in a brand new ballpark that promised to be a very exciting one......and then this happens!
  14. Even at his first at bat for the Dodgers Hanley didn't run hard when he thought the ball was either going to be caught in deep center or it was going to be a HR. As Hanley slowly ran to first base, he saw the center fielder miss-played the ball and as it hit off the wall Hanley started running hard and reached third standing and even made a big turn past the bag. In other words, he should have had an inside the park HR. I guess that was Hanley really being Hanley.
  15. So sad to think that Hanley's last at bat as a Marlin was a called third strike to end the game.
