Considering the talent on the roster sucks, adding a guy like Bourjos (a real CF'er) would be cool. Nolasco for Bourjos straight up probably doesn't get it done.

 

Thus, I think we should take on Vernon Wells contract as though we'd be taking on an expiring contract in the NBA.

After '14, he leaves when we're probably ready to compete again.

Most importantly, it gives us leverage to add a talented CF'er in Bourjos. Nolasco leaves, opening up an opportunity for a younger pitcher.

 

If free agents are reluctant to sign, we need to trade for talent. Taking on Wells contract should be no problem here considering how cheap the rest of the team is going to be.

Especially if they don't extend Stanton, the team becomes even cheaper/cost-controlled.

Good Lord, that makes so much sense that it hurts.

I would do it. Maybe something like Stanton + Nolasco + money for Nolasco's salary for Olt + Profar + a good pitching prospect. Then go after Bourjos. The team's future would look much brighter after a trade like that.

Another Miguel Cabrera situation would be letting him go for nothing.

Why would the Marlins want to take on all of that salary when they aren't going to be competing? I mean, what's the point of paying for Vernon Wells far above his market value when they just got rid of a bunch of contracts?

 

And you think that taking on Vernon Wells' contract would be worth it just so they can get Bourjos? Let's not kid ourselves. Bourjos has some potential and I'd like to have him but while the glove is there, the bat isn't. That's not even close to being worth taking on that much payroll.

Stanton is a generational player. No smart team lets a player like that go.

 

However, the Marlins put themselves into a really tricky position. That Blue Jays trade may have upset Stanton enough that he may not even want to consider re-signing here regardless of the money we offer because he feels betrayed by the front office. If that's the case, we have no choice but to trade him at some point in the future.

 

However, if there's even the slightest chance that Stanton would consider an extension, there's no way you can trade him.

 

This wouldn't be an issue though if the Marlins actually did the right thing and gave Stanton that extension that should've been done right after his first few months in the majors (or at the very least at the end of his first or second full seasons). Bourjos is a 3-4 win player with consistent playing time in CF.
