Posted October 6, 200519 yr The Marlins on Wednesday began the process to replace manager Jack McKeon, asking the New York Yankees for permission to interview bench coach Joe Girardi. The Yankees granted that permission and Girardi, a longtime favorite of Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria, told reporters he would try to met with the Marlins on a Yankees' off day during the post-season. Marlins coverage McKeon resigns It is not clear whether an interview date has been set. The Yankees returned to New York from Anaheim, Calif., after playing the Angels in Game 2 of the American League division series late Wednesday night. They are off today and play Game 3 Friday. Loria has an office in an art gallery he owns in Manhattan. "We'll see what comes of it,'' Girardi told The New York Times. Girardi, 41, is a leading candidate to replace McKeon, who resigned after Sunday's season finale. Girardi interviewed for the Marlins' bench coach job last off-season. Also Monday, the Marlins were contacted by the agent for Ken Macha hours after the Oakland Athletics' manager failed to reach an agreement on a new contract with the team. Macha, 55, told reporters this month in Oakland that the Marlins would be an ideal managing job because the team is competitive. On Wednesday, Macha's agent apparently made contact with the Marlins about their vacancy. Marlins General Manager Admin Beinfest did not immediately return a call. Macha's agent, Alan Nero, could not be reached, but he told the Associated Press that the Marlins are interested. Nero also spoke Wednesday with Pirates General Manager Dave Littlefield about the managerial opening in Pittsburgh, where Macha lives. Meanwhile, Littlefield also interviewed former Los Angeles Dodgers manager Jim Tracy by phone for two hours. This after Littlefield flew to Atlanta and met Monday with Braves coach Fredi Gonzalez, who also is a candidate for the Marlins. Oakland offered Macha a three-year deal with a club option, but Macha wanted a three-year deal without a club option. The option would have allowed the A's to decide whether to keep Macha after three seasons. Macha led the A's to the AL West title in his first year as manager in 2003, the club's fourth straight playoff berth. But Oakland failed to reach the post-season in the past two years despite a 91-win season in 2004 and 88 victories this year. http://www.palmbeachpost.com/marlins/conte...aseru_1006.html

What do you guys think?
October 6, 200519 yr Author Absolutely. If we waited until after the World Series, it's possible most of our main candidates are taken. I think we'll get a manager by next week. I would like to read something saying that we are going to interview Fredi and Mancha. And, how about Tony Pena? Come on Beinfest!
October 6, 200519 yr I want Macha. Now. my thoughts exactly. here's an idea of how much he might cost us: "I can go home and sleep and know that we used tremendous character to get through this season," Macha said. Macha led the A's to the AL West title in his first year as manager in 2003, the club's fourth straight playoff berth. But Oakland failed to reach the postseason the past two years despite a 91-win season in 2004 and 88 victories this year. The A's offered Macha a three-year, $2.625 million contract with a $1.2 million club option for a fourth season. Macha's agent, Alan Nero, countered with a three-year deal for $4 million ? without an option. When Beane balked, Nero presented him a counteroffer worth $3.1 million over three years. "I don't think we were ever going to be able to bridge the gap," Beane said. "It was a significant gap. ... There are no hard feelings whatsoever. This is part of the business." Nero said he spoke to Pirates general manager Dave Littlefield about the managerial vacancy in Pittsburgh, where Macha lives. The Florida Marlins also are interested. Macha hopes teams will take into account how the A's performed with such a young roster. Macha was 275-211 in three seasons with the A's. He came to Oakland in 1999 and was promoted from bench coach when Art Howe left for the New York Mets after the 2002 season. http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/mari...644_base06.html what do you cats think? $1m+ per year is a little bit more than what jack was costing us, but it's worth it, imo.
October 6, 200519 yr Author I don't think he's too expensive for us. We can certainly afford him. I think we have 3 quality candidates in Girardi, Mancha, and Fredi. Mancha has experience and a winning track record. Fredi has managed exceptionally well in the minor leagues, but no experience in the big leagues. Girardi is young and smart, but has never managed (and only has one year as bench coach). They're all good. Loria prides himself in being able to pick out talent... so I trust his judgment.
October 6, 200519 yr We get Fredi Gonzalez and the Cabrera 'issue' dies right there. Every game against the Braves Lowell and Cabrera spend a significant time talking to Fredi. For that reason alone, he is my frontrunner. Oh yeah, he also has been learning from a certain Bobby Cox for some time.

I mean, he would be ideal for us because 1) of our Latin stars and 2) our market. I WANT FREDI!!!!!!!!!!!
October 6, 200519 yr So far we have some interesting names in the mix: Girardi - propped up as the next big mgr in the league - worked under Torre, young, bright baseball mind, and a former catcher. Freddi - former Marlins coach, knows some of the team, speaks Spanish, worked under Cox - also a promising future manager Macha - positive exp in Oakland with a payroll pinched A's team - might be more expensive then above two One I would like to have considered is Alan Trammell from the Tigers - he was stuck with a very weak team and weak pitching - that team is moving in the right direction under Dombrowski personnel manuevers and now with Leyland - expect Dombrowski to make some veteran acquisitions in the offseason. But Trammel was well liked by his team and maybe a new surrounding and our pitching staff will do him good. What do u think?
October 6, 200519 yr I heart Macha. IMO this is one of those classic sports departures that turns out to be totally idiotic by the team. Fredi is second for me. Im not big on Girardi.

In all honesty, I think the Marlins have three outstanding candidates in Girardi, Gonzalez and Macha...I don't think Beinfest can go wrong with any of the three. I happened to like Girardi based on his knowledge of the game and recent playing days. Gonzalez might end up the best fit due to his ethnic background and fit with the team and community. Should be an interesting process.
October 7, 200519 yr I like all 4 of the canidates (I count lou too). I think any of them would be solid for us, depending on the direction we go. I like Macha the best.
