The Spelling Bee begins

Featured Replies

Any other spelling bee junkies out there? This is appointment viewing for me every year.

The competition has begun today, and tomorrow's rounds will be on ESPN from 10 AM - 12 PM, and then 1 PM til there's a winner. Nothing more fun than watching poorly adjusted kids spell ridiculous words that you couldn't even pronounce.

Based on the past two years, I would say the two favorites to look out for are Samir Sudhir Patel and Marshall Kelly Wincester.

Patel took the spelling world by storm two years ago when he came in 3rd place as the youngest speller in the competition. He wasn't even tall enough to reach the mic. I think Patel needs one more year of studying and experience, and next year he'll blow everyone out. This year belongs to Wincester.

Let's talk about some spelling.

OMG, the Miami kids are awesome this year.

Dovie Eisner of Yeshiva Toras Emes Rohr Middle School. He is currently writing a novel, which he has entitled "Jonathan of the Red Corps."

and

Allion A. Salvador of Westminster Academy, Fort Lauderdale. He's 10 and he's teaching himself French.

All 4 spellers highlighted here have passed Round 3. Out of an initial 273 spellers, I think there are 65 left. Round 4 will start at 4 PM, and that will be all for today.

Eisner got a very easy Round 3 word..."nefarious". Hashem must be looking out for him.

Salvador's word was "xenocentric". Nothing too hard.

Eisner survives. He will be on TV tomorrow after spelling "diphthongize" correctly. As in, "you best step off, or I'm gonna diphtongize yo momma!"

Unfortunately, our little friend Salvador is toast, after misspelling "prelacy". He went with "prelissi", which makes no sense at all.

No TV today, but you can follow all the action on www.spellingbee.com.

Tomorrow, as mentioned, will be on ESPN. You will not be sorry if you tune in.

I believe the girl in that commercial is the "euonym" girl, who is quite famous in spelling circles. In fact, if you google euonym, she will be mentioned in the first result. And it was 1997, which was, unfortunately, before the bee was appointment viewing for me.

Wincester represents Charlotte, NC. And he has eased into the final day with a correct spelling of "cancellous", which is apparently a medical term.

By my count, 51 of 71 remaining spellers made it through Round 4.

The excitement continues tomorrow...WHO WILL BE CROWNED SPELLING CHAMPION?????

ok that one dude has a full mustache

Haha, sweet...there always seems to be one. Which guy?

no clue, saw him on PTI

this is a Tom Selleck Magnum type stache

Finally, someone else passionate about spelling bee as me. :plain

Yes, I know the above sentence is a fragment.

Ok, lets have a draft like the Marlin prospect one. We all should adopt a speller and the winning speller's "adopter" gets like some prize.

That's a good idea. I'm down. We need some kind of quick deadline for signups and then a rapid draft. Hard to pull off. Unless we go free-for-all style.
