2003 Marlins

Featured Replies

I'm writing an informative speech on the 2003 Marlins, but I need some help. I was wondering if anyone knows how many wins Dontrelle had and what his ERA was when he first started? Also any other cool facts would be appreciated. thanks.

The Marlins came to life the night they were destroyed 25-8 by the Boston Red Sox. Make sure to include that.

14-6, 3.30, NL ROY

In 2003, the Marlins played in Pro Player Stadium. Now they have moved to the same stadium, but it has a new name. :)

EDIT: I did have "Field", but I corrected it. Yes, I am a moron.

It was a Saturday night, May 10th to be exact, the Jeff Torborg-led Marlins had just lost to the Rockies 5-4. Their record, after the lost, was 16-22. That was the end for Torborg, as he was fired during the night.

Sunday brought a new day and a new manager....Jack McKeon, a man in his early 70's. McKeon didn't turn it around right away, the Marlins fell to 10 games below .500(19-29), after being swept on the road, by the Dodgers and Expos.

When the Fish returned home, they went on a 6 game winning streak. They ended the regular season at 91-71. They went to the playoffs as the NL "Wild Card".

It was quite a turn around.

wrong it was the next night ....although on that day the marlins FO announced that mike lowell would not be traded as rumored to chicago

but the next day the marlins were losing 8-7 or something and mike lowell hit a home run in the top of the 9th to give the marlins the lead after coming back from like a 7-0 deficit...then there was a runner on second base in the bottom of the ninth and jp made a diving catch to catch the ball then lobbed it to alex who stomped on second for the double play...that win put the marlins back at the 500 mark at 42-42 for the first time in a long time...the end.

For some reason (maybe because it was a late game)

I have one of Dontrelle's first starts against San Diego on tape somewhere. It was an ESPN Wednesday Night telecast from what was supposed to be a radio-only game.

I consider the 25-8 game the turning point.

The bottom we had been searching for 6 years.

That night the team became a solid unit. The late innings really brought them together with our pitcher (i forgot who he was) being hit by a linedrive to the head. Then the Marlins 'retaliating' according to the Red Sox. In the 8th? the Red Sox hit one of our players. A near brawl insued on the field and Tommy Hutton nearly had a heart attack in the booth chewing out the pitcher who threw at the Marlins. Then you had the near lovefest by ESPN over the loss. After the game McKeon speaking of the Red Sox tagging up on flyballs to the OF in a 20 run game. That night lit the spark in them.

Talk about a name from the past.

Let me add Ricky Bones and Gary Knotts to this thread.

Throw in the spark we got by bringing back Niner, who came up with all of the clutch hits and defensive plays against the Phillies, the team we were battling with for the wild card. (And of course, his assist to Pudge who hung onto the ball and finished off the Giants.)

I hate to bring back the name of a departed hated pitcher on this forum but in that game where they came back a won...Nate Bump made his MLB debut. Talk about pressure!

He came in in a mess (as Jack loves to do to rookies) and ended up with the win. I have that one on tape and I just think I may get it out and watch it.

I also think that was a turning point in the season. They seem to really believe in themselves even though they did lose the next day. Penny took that loss.
