Some here differ on how well the marlins did, true they had 8 of the top 96 selection, but you need to look deep into the selection.

1.top HS pitcher in FLA in Chris Volstad

2. top HS pitcher in LA. in Sean West and the top college pitcher in Jacob Marceaux

3.top HS pitcher in Cali in Ryan Tucker(it was Sean O?Sullivan at the start of the season)

4. top HS pitcher in Colorado in Kyle Winters

5. top lefty(maybe top pitcher) in GA. Matt Goyen

maybe things aren't that bad :D

They tried but why reach for one.

here's an example the Marlins were set to take Colby Rasmus at 29 but St Louis with the 28 took him. Cards knew he wouldn't be there at 30.

OF John Drennen could have been had at 34 but the Indians took him one spot before at 33

1B Henry Sanchez is another good bat in that supp first round, but he went in the middle of the round and 1B was NOT a priority early inthe draft IMO

3B/RF/1B Kris Harvey is good power bat , personally I would have prefer SS Yuniel Escobar, but I still like the pick.

C Brett Hayes is baseball player playing anywhere and everywhere to help his team . A very good Catcher, but I guess you'd liked to have seen Taylor Teagarden instead?

C/3B Gaby Sanchez I love Sanchez he was the Canes offense last season(in 04') NOT Braun the Brewers top pick this year. He was such a clutch hitter. You'll hear from this kid in the next couple of season

2B James Guerrero can flat hit and has been coach by Tony Gywnn, if he was 2-3 inch bigger would have been a top 10 selection.

1B Aaron Bates is one of the top hitter in ACC drive the ball to all fields.

I see some potentially good hitter in the Marlins draft, true there were some misses, but they selected some solid hitters. Remember two years ago the Marlins went with all position players after the Allison selection. The fish did very well going with what was the strength of the draft HS pitching :thumbup

They tried but why reach for one.

Why was Thompson taken over Ellsbury? There have already been reports that Thompson will be hard to sign, and Ellsbury was the logical choice at that time, and would've filled a need for us too.

That's definitely the pick I have the biggest problem with.

I just don't know what they were thinking there. Hopefully they get him signed but if they do he ain't comin cheap.

Remember the Marlins love left-handed pitching. Thompson WAS going to be hard to sign before the draft, but not anymore. According to family members he's more willing to sign with a Pro team(the Marlins now) b/c the picthing coach at A&M was just let go.

Was Thompson a reach? maybe, but they thought he was the top SIGNABLE lefty and didn't want to lose him waiting till 29 selection

Why not Ellsbury? b/c they were counting on Colby to be there at 29, but St.Louis beat them to him at 28 and he was the OF they were counting on.

I guess I'm just thinking the opposite of what the FO was thinking, because I would much rather have Ellsbury to Rasmus, and I actually liked the pickup of Marceaux at 29, I think he's going to be solid although I thought we could've gotten him a little later if we wanted too.

1st Round

I like the Chris Voldstad pick but I would have preferred LHP Brian Bogusevic at 22 (Astros at 24) and at 29 RHP Matt Torra (Dbacks 31) or OF John Drennen (Cle 34) although I like Jacob Marceaux especially with the Roy Oswalt comparisons but I saw him more of a supplement 1st cause of his size.

Supplement 1st

I don't like the Ryan Tucker pick cause I hear he only has a Fastball although he was rated as having the 3 best fastball among high school pitchers in the nation by baseball america. He is still young and has a chance of developing hs others pitches but i would have prefered a more sure thing at that spot like a Jacob Marceaux. Other high school pitchers I liked more at that spot where Tyler Herron from Florida (Cards 46) and Michael Bowden(Boston 47). I like the Sean West pick he is a workhorse already who hits 91-92 already and has potential to increase his velocity(6-8) cause of his age and height.

2nd Round

Im okay with it if they use Kris Harvey as a hitter but if they are gonna use him as a pitcher I would have prefered Josh Wall who I think will become a stud(Dodgers 74). Scouts compare him to A.J Burnett has a low 90's fastaball and a good curve and has room to gain more velocity (height 6-6) has potential to become an Ace. I would have been tempted to take him in the supplemental 1st and 2nd I believe its a must if they where looking for pitching.

Supplemental 2nd

I like the Brett Hayes pick. IMO best catching prospect in our farm system already considering Josh Williangham ain't considered a catcher more a UT,OF.

Thats my point of view on the Draft the Marlins. (First 2 rounds only)

I like the 5th and 8th round picks the Marlins made alot as well.

3B/RF/1B Kris Harvey is good power bat , personally I would have prefer SS Yuniel Escobar, but I still like the pick.

Great overview, I agree with alot of what you said, but Brian Bogusevic at 22? Thompson will be a better pitcher IMO.

Boguesevic has 3 pitches Thompson has 4 solid pitches

Boguesevic location and velocity have slipped, while Thompson location is great and is still growing

If you notice the players the Marlins drafted that played in the Cape Cod league(wood bat league) did vey well, and in some cases really was the decisiding factor seperating one player from another.

*LHP Matt Goyen had 18 strikeouts in one start (three shy of the league record) and recorded 26 straight outs. He led the league in strikeouts with 80 in 57 innings.

* 1B Aaron Bates had a big spring, and he has a track record of hitting with wood, batting .339 and winning team MVP honors last summer in the California Collegiate League(west coast verison of the Cape Cod league).

*RHP Jim Brauer has consistently pitched well in the Cape Cod League, earning all-star honors in 2001 and 2003 and tossing a no-hitter in 2002

In other it was a case they felt the ceiling on that player had been reached like Ellsbury(power)

As for Wall and the Burnett comparisons thats a stretch IMO. Wall had a chance to impress during a April showdown with.... Aaron Thompson. A dozens of scouts attended. Thompson responded with 15 strikeouts and a 2-0 shutout?handing Wall's team it was his only loss in the spring. Don't get me wrong Wall is a very good pitcher, but I have no problem with none of the top selections. Though if I had to pick one that I would change is the Tucker selection, but that's b/c I loved Craig Italiano. And if your taken a closer there Craig Italiano is my guy or Mark McCormick(but here its the Boras factor)

and YES Brett Hayes is the best catcher right in the Marlins system.

Ellsbury isn't a power hitter, what he is, is the prototypical leadoff guy. An on base machine with lots of speed, and a good defensive centerfielder.

Hey don't kill the messager , but remember those type of players can found later in the draft like Eric Reed. In that spot your looking for a guy who projects power later on in his baseball career.

In my opinion Eric Reed will never be an every day player in the majors. He's a terrific defensive player but he strikes out all the time and rarely takes a walk.

We picked up one of those guys, a legacy case no less, in the 2nd round.
