Hey guys, I am new to the board. My name is Todd and I am from Southern Illinois, so I dont get to see the Fish all that often. They are my fav team, have been since I was 9(innaugural season)...I am 21 now. Fav players are Gonzo, Burnett, and Lowell...and recently Brian Moehler has been becoming one of my favs as well. I belong to two other boards and just for fun I throw trade ideas out there alot. Alot of them involve Willingham, and from what I've read those might not go over that well on this board. But the only ones I have come up with so far this year are:

Jason Stokes, Ismael Valdez, and a minor league pitcher, maybe Bostik from the lower levels to the Astros for Brad Lidge(I read somewhere we were interested in him). Another was Juan Encarnacion and another minor leaguer position player to the Pirates for Ryan Voglesong and Mike Gonzalez.

Welcome to the boards.

The Astros would have to get a lot more than Stokes, Valdez and a couple minor prospects for Lidge. They won't take our scraps for one of the better closers in the league.

You would think, but they are so horrendous this season and they have another...younger...MLB ready closer, so they might not be asking for as much as one would think.

Yeah, but they still aren't stupid. It's not like they're obligated to the Marlins, and while I think Stokes has value to them (being a deadpull righty in that ballpark, and with Bagwell pretty much off into the sunset), he isn't a guy to build a team or trade around, and Lidge could easily net them just about any player from the Braves, Mets, Yankees, Red Sox or any of the other 20 teams that would love to have him, and they could take a bad contract off the Astros' hands. A trade for Lidge would have to involve at least Bazardo and Olsen, and I'm not sure the Marlins should pay that price for a reliever when we could have rotation issues next year. Now, if we're going to become a big market team (read: keep our own and add through F.A.), then the move is a no-brainer considering there really is no such thing as a true "pitching prospect," but with everything considered, I think the best bullpen arm the Marlins can hope for is Jose Mesa. Not to say a shocker couldn't happen, but we've been rebuffed on an offer for Urbina, and we balked at the price of Fuentes...not exactly great omens for a Lidge acquisition.

BOARD! Whats that mean??? :confused Oh, and I have always been under the belief that Bazardo was our closer of the future, not a sure rotation sign. Anyhow, Stokes might not be a person to build a team around, but he is something(a top 1B prospect) that the Astros need. And lets be realistic: Urbina, as good as he is, and Fuentes, are neither one as good as Lidge. Like I said, give them a 5th starter in Valdez to put back in the rotation, Stokes, and another pitching prospect that might be ready for the show. I dont agree with giving up Olsen.

Valdez is a replacement-level 5th starter. No one wants or needs to trade for him.

I could see the Astros having some interest in Stokes, but but as a key piece.

P.S. Welcome to the board.

Thanks for all the warm welcomes :D And I dont really throw trade ideas out there that often, just something I think would help the team. I grew up 60 miles east of St. Louis right smack dab in the middle of Cardinal nation. I hate the Cardinals...with a passion. The Redbirds are forced down all of our collective throats and I seem to be the only one to ever protest it(well me and a few scattered Cubs fans who are no better). The thought here is if you dont think a certain Cardinal is the best at his position you know absolutely nothing about baseball and they know hardly anything about players from any other team. Dont listen to when they say they have "the best most knowledgeable fans" its a load of horse crap, trust me I have lived with them for 21 years. I was talking to one the other day actually who said John Mabry is a better hitter than Juan Pierre...not just this year but always...and I proved the guy wrong and he told me I was a moron and threatened to kick my ass. And the owner of my local pub calls Mikey Lowell overrated just to piss me off...and then he brings up my least favorite Marlin of all time in Edgar Renteria, who I thought is probably the most overrated defensive SS in history(well, besides Jeter). Sorry for the anti-Cardinal rant, I just hate them so much.

I would spam and just say a un-needed welcome. But I think its a really good trade idea. I really think you have a good point in the astros, who seem to produce Shut down closers as fast as weeds grow in my yard, I imagine they have another good closer to back up lidge. On the negative, i think they might want a little bit more and i would think that move would cause an emotional explosion within our bullpen, Mota wants to Close, Todd Jones is doing a hell of a Job closing and Lidge would want to close as well.

My thoughts on it are: 8th inning Mota then 9th inning Lidge would be as potentially great as Mota/Gagne was...my whole thoughts on that...and I am impressed with Jones so far this season, but whether he can keep it up is yet to be seen, and if our postseason dreams come true, I'd rather have Lidge and his killer slider and upper 90's fastball out there in a short series.

That Lidge trade sounds like unloading our garbage.

a la brad penny to la?

Wow

Hot rod, you've got very good points and your post's are easy to read. I dont really agree on Bumping Todd Jones out of the closer spot beacuse he is very deserving however if it helps our tem to put him as a 7th inning guy go for it and your right Lidge has some lethal pitches i remember him dominating in the playoffs last year.

I wouldnt call Penny our garbage, and at the time of that trade he was our 2nd best pitcher behind Pavano and had what the 7th best era in the NL? I'm just glad we have Brad Penny version 2 down in Carolina, and I cant wait to see what Josh Johnson has. As for the Lidge deal, if we could get it for what I said good, if we had to give up a little but not much more I'd still say do it. As for the turmoil it would cause in the bullpen...these guys are professionals making alot of money, and I know a certain status comes out of performance but they will still get their checks, and if we could get a dominant lightsout closer like that, I'd hope they'd be professional enough to realize that it would be for the good of the team. Jones strikes me as that type of guy, who would just say "get r done kid"..he seems like a real standup guy and I am glad we have him on the team, and in reality he was probably our 4th closer option at the start of the season, behind Mota, Alfonseca, and maybe...just possibly...Spooneybarger.

Not to mention Penny was the best pitcher available at a point in the season where pitchers of that quality claim the best returns.
