The Yankees talked to Colorado about Shawn Chacon, and also Chacon in conjunction with Eric Byrnes. The Rockies want Sean Henn and Scott Proctor for Chacon but will aim higher (Melky Cabrera?) for both players.

Doug Mientkiewicz is said to be "on a short leash" once he returns. Victor Diaz gets the next crack at first base, as trade talks aren't yielding much. There's Mike Lowell (too much money), Todd Helton (way too much money) and Lyle Overbay (not available).

The Braves might consider trading Rafael Furcal once Chipper Jones returns.

MLB aide: Sox

will get Burnett

Marlins righthander A.J. Burnett will be traded to the Red Sox within a week, an MLB official said yesterday. Boston plans to sign Burnett to an extension.

Red Sox special assistant Bill Lajoie watched Burnett's outing Thursday in Philadelphia, when he allowed six runs in five innings, including second-inning homers to Pat Burrell, Ryan Howard and Mike Lieberthal. Burnett is 5-6 with a 3.64 ERA in 18 starts this season.

"There is no truth at all to any deal we are making with the Marlins," Sox GM Theo Eptein said via an E-mail.

On the Adam Dunn front:

"Well, late last week, Houston was hard at work on a deal that would bring them ADAM DUNN from Cincinnati in exchange for pitching prospects... Most believe the one player the Reds will deal for sure is third baseman JOE RANDA, with the Twins very interested."

White Sox, Cardinals among teams to be buying at deadline

July 17

San Francisco Chronicle: "Cardinals GM Walt Jocketty, who annually makes big-time acquisitions in July, wants another outfield bat and left-handed reliever (Billy Wagner would be perfect, but pricey). White Sox GM Kenny Williams is seeking depth in both the rotation and bullpen and remains interested in Jason Schmidt and A.J. Burnett."

Teams show interest in Padilla, Wagner

July 18

PhillyBurbs.com: "Just in case the Phillies hold a fire sale before the July 31 trade deadline, the Boston Red Sox have been scouting closer Billy Wagner for a week and the Texas Rangers began monitoring pitcher Vicente Padilla on Sunday... The feeling also is Thome would drop his no-trade clause only for a few teams, perhaps the Chicago Cubs, Chicago White Sox, St. Louis Cardinals and Cleveland Indians."

Wells draws crowd, including Phillies

July 18

Philadelphia Daily News (registration required): "With the trade deadline approaching in 13 days, the Phillies had their pro scouting director in town on the day that Pirates righthander Kip Wells faced the Cubs. With starting pitchers at a premium as usual, scouts from Toronto, Tampa Bay, Detroit, Arizona and St. Louis also showed up. The Pirates need a cheap power bat and a first baseman. That is what Ryan Howard will be for about 3 years."

We all know about Wagner.. Of course I'm interested in him.. Thome? Alright but uh.. What do we do then? LoL.. I guess Pujols to LF? But then we cant move Sanders to RF with Walker there.. Umm.. Yea.. LOL.. Pass on Padilla but go after Wells. I just see more potential in Kip and Pittsburgh may not want that much for him.

Mora to STL?:

Also, one freshie making the rounds is this:

if the O's get Nevin from the Padres, they send Mora to STL for Marquis, and Wainwright comes up.

Mora can play multiple positions, including 3B and both corner OF spots.

Bernie: Where did u hear this rumor

I can't say.

sorry...

I know this much.... regardless of what the Cardinals do, I don't want to hear Bill DeWitt say with a straight face that there's no money to add to the payroll.

These people are milking Busch for every nickel and are too cheap to even fix the flipping dugout steps to prevent an injury to players.

They're gonna have a cash-cow stadium opening next year, and they're going to jump to KTRS to make more money and to "do what's best for the fans."

The Cincinnati man had better take care of the STL fans if Jocketty has a chance to improve this team.
