July 31, 200520 yr Monday is the start of the Mu Alpha Theta National Convention in Honolulu, Hawaii at Ala Moana. Stoneman Douglas(my school) has won the last three championships straight and has five overall. IMO there's no way we win this year, having lost states to Buchholz High in Gainesville. Then there's those hicks from Vestavia Hills, Alabama who own at math. Anyways, I leave Monday morning early. Bleh, I'm not ready at all for the competition, but it's Hawaii, and anything in Hawaii is kewl. I get back August 7th and school starts the 8th. :waving

July 31, 200520 yr Author CSHS baby...may have graduated, but still feel the rivalries. where in CS are you from? since youre not from Parkland I dont hate you as much. :-) 880961 I live in The Hills, so I barely was able to stay at Douglas and not have to go to Coral Glades.
July 31, 200520 yr Author My extremely cheesy speech on math in traffic for the chalk talk event(I got second last year): :plain As the remains of Hurricane Dennis menaced the United States, a tornado hit an isolated farm in Kansas. As this occurred, a house containing Dorothy and her little dog too got swept up from the ground. Meanwhile, in Munchinland, several hard-working little people were commuting to work. Their cars traveled in a kinematic wave. Many times, the kinematic wave of cars will slow down as the cars at the front of disturbance stop to look at an accident, or in this case, a falling house. As the wave of cars slowing down met the faster wave, a shock wave occurred, with a velocity Q(flow rate)2-Q1/K2(concentration)-K1. The velocity of each wave is Q/K The slow wave had 469 vehicles per hour and 150 vehicles per mile. The faster wave had 1500 per hour and 40 vehicles per mile. Driving through this wave was the mayor of Munchin City. The velocity of such a wave can be found by taking Q/K. The Mayor was moving at 37.5 when he reached the other wave traveling at 3.1 miles per hour, and had to slow down rapidly, thus leading to the shockwave. Seconds later, a Kansas style farmhouse landed on the mayor. As Dorothy stepped out of her house she remarked she wasn?t in Kansas anymore, for a state with such strict GOP values would never allow such a lack of gun ownership. As it turned out, Dorothy?s house had landed on and destroyed the wicked hard equation of the east. This caused the Munchins to perform an improntu yet perfectly chorographed song and dance complete with much giggling. When she asked how to get home, they told her ?Follow the yellowbrick road? to see the Mathical Wizard that?s Odd, but first she had to meet the mayor. However, Dorothy?s house had killed the mayor, ending the giggle fest and causing the Munchin police department to attempt to arrest Dorothy. As Dorothy fled in a car along the yellowbrick road from the munchin police, she tried to keep enough distance headway. Distance headway is the distance from a lead vehicle to a following vehicle. Distance headway at a time t is calculated using d=Ln+g, where L is the physical length of the gap and g is the gap length between the vehicles at time t. Time headway, h, is calculated using d=h+x, where d is distance headway and x is the speed of vehicle n during the period it drives the length of d. This form can calculated density using k=5280/d, where d is the average distance headway on the highway. After escaping arrest, Dorothy suddenly saw a presidential Texan on the side of the road. The freedom loving Texan explainicated to Dorothy he didn?t know any math, and sang ?Oh I can tell you why, two plus two is four!? Dorothy insisted the Texan would be better off asking the wizard for singing lessons, and continued to Oz. As she continued down the yellowbrick road, Dorothy also found a tin man with no cardiod and a cowardly line. Dorothy and company encountered flying monkeys sent by the wicked hard equation of the west. The rate at which cars, or flying monkeys cross a certain boundary can be defined by the equation Q/x+K/t=0, where x is distance is position and t is time. There were too many monkeys appearing for Dorothy and company to do anything. The wicked of the west suddenly appeared, but it had to come to a sudden stop. The minimum distance required to stop can be discovered using the formula, S=(V)2/30(f+-g), where v is the speed at the beginning of deceleration, f is the coefficient of friction, and g is the grade situation. The wicked hard equation was traveling 95 miles an hour with a friction coefficient of .28, while the grade situation was _ , which gave a distance of _meters, but the tree in front of the equation was 5 meters away, so it slammed into the tree and was defeated. The flying monkeys quit their pursuit. As Dorothy exited the yellowbrick road to go to Oz, she exited on a rose curve, which is a trig graph on the polar plane. Many highways in the United States feature such curves. After arriving in Oz, Dorothy was pulled over for speeding, but the officer did not have a radar gun. The officer explained Dorothy?s time vs. distance could be calculated with the equation, 2x2-8x+12. By taking the derative of the equation, the officer got the equation of her velocity to be 4x-8. Therefore at a time of 10 minutes, she would be traveling at 32 mph, 2 over the speed limit. Therefore, the officer could tell Dorothy was speeding and remarked, ?That?s how we math the day away in merry old land of Oz.? Also, Oz authorities were notified of the murder of the mayor Munchin city, Dorothy was arrested. At this point, the cowardly line went to the Wizard and asked to free Dorothy. The Mathmatical Wizard that?s Odd agreed to do so only after he designed the new traffic light system in Oz. Dorothy?s companions went to look for a way to design a green light system. They decided to ask an expert on designing roads, California Governator Arnold Subractaneggar and asked him for help. Arnold remarked that ?It?s not a tumar?, which probably meant he could solve the problem. Arnold told them capacity in vehicles per hour, c, of a light can be defined by the equation c=(g/C)s. g is the effective green time in seconds, C is the signal cycle length in seconds and s is what is know as the saturation flow rate. The saturation flow rate is equivalent maximum hourly rate at which vehicles can traverse a lane or intersection. Arnold explained ?find the g if you want to live.? The effective green time can be calculated with the formula g=G+a-(ls+le), where G is actual green time, a is the time the light is yellow, which ls and le are the starting lost time and ending lost time respectively. In Oz, Arnold suggested a green time of 180 seconds a yellow time of 30 seconds with starting time and ending time lost both 10 seconds. This left an effective green time of 190 seconds and cycle length of 390 seconds. Thus a saturation flow rate of 2718 vehicles per second left a capacity of 1324 vehicles per hour. An ideal traffic system contains what are known as ?green waves?, where the light is cyclical. In such a cycle, the stopping time at a light can be calculated by T=R2/2(R+G), where R is red time and G is green time. After hearing this, the Wizard freed Dorothy and let her go home to Kansas with new knowledge after the application of mathematics in traffic. The wizard helped Dorothy?s companions by giving the tin-calculator the equation 2+2cosx and the Texan who couldn?t math a copy of Hooked on Conics.
July 31, 200520 yr CSHS baby...may have graduated, but still feel the rivalries. where in CS are you from? since youre not from Parkland I dont hate you as much. :-) 880961 I went to CSHS too. You might remember my trash compactor satire video that played on the morning announcements in 2003. Or maybe not. I went to math states my junior year, our school sucked at math so anyone who wanted to go got to go. I went because it was in Orlando and there was a free trip included to Islands of Adventure. I failed all the math tests and went to a concert at House of Blues.

July 31, 200520 yr I graduated in '03. 882662 :mischief2 I probably know you :lol What Middle School/Elem School did you go to? If you went to Forest Glen and/or Coral Park then there is a big chance I know who you are :thumbup
August 1, 200520 yr Haha, I went to both Forest Glen and Coral Park... my name's Lee Hurwitz. 882672 :o OMG I know you :lol I remember you were in one of my classes.. in Coral Park I think!
August 1, 200520 yr Author CSHS has this little Asian kids whose about 3 feet tall and annoys everyone. I think he got first once. Besides him, CSHS has no one.
August 1, 200520 yr Im sure I saw the satire but dont remember it (your name sounds familiar though). Holly you woulda been in my grade then...I graduated from CSHS in 04...whats your name? and where else did you go?
August 1, 200520 yr Author Well, I'll be back Sunday to annoy ya'll once again. Until then: Be excellent to each other. And party on dudes!
