August 3, 200521 yr The new-look NHL has some brand new players in the free agent market. Dishing out big contracts to big players is no longer a summertime activity limited to large-market teams. Welcome to the party, Columbus and Atlanta. Two of the NHL's three youngest franchises jumped into the fray on a very busy Tuesday as Columbus nabbed topflight defenseman Adam Foote, and Atlanta signed rugged forward Bobby Holik. On Monday, the first day of the free agent shopping season, only the Florida Panthers made major news when they signed forwards Joe Nieuwendyk and Gary Roberts away from Toronto. But several teams got in the mix on Day 2, trying to fill up their new $39 million salary cap. "In the old system, without a salary cap, more teams would have been involved in it and who knows where the numbers would have ended up," Thrashers general manager Don Waddell said. "But the new system with the salary cap I think puts more teams on an equal ground because we all have the same amount of money to spend." More here: http://nhl.com/news/2005/08/231698.html Imagine in MLB had a salary cap, would be great to see some of the classic teams like the Royals be competitive again. Go to the NHL transactiosn thread to discuss the specific tranasctions. But this is just awesome, small market teams no more.
August 3, 200521 yr The Royals were a great organization with that strong midwest following. They suck now as an organization though. The baseball salary cap is a whole different thing though.
August 3, 200521 yr Author Royals and Classic....in the same sentence? 886579 You know what I mean.

The real classics of the MLB...Cubs, Red Sox, Yankees all have big payrolls. It's not so much about money as it is about good management.

If you gave that team a 90 million dollar salary cap, they'd win 75 games with the stupid moves they've made in the last 3 years. It's good to finally be on the same playing field with the Detroit's and Colorado's of the world.
August 3, 200521 yr This is exactly what MLB didn't want to see happen. Now that the NHL has agreed to a new CBA, MLB is the only professional sports organization without one. And if the owners see how well it is working for them, they may force the issue in the next round of CB talks...
August 3, 200521 yr Yeah, but the MLB union is considerably stronger than the NHL one. If a Salary Cap ever gets agreed to, it would be a very very high one.

But the MLB Union is among the 5 strongest unions in the world regardless of industry. Enforcing a salary cap, though a great idea, would take a lot of convincing and probably a very destructive strike if it is to be done anytime in the next ten years.
August 4, 200521 yr Author The MLB salary cap will be $350 million. 887478 :lol :notworthy
