For most of my life Uranus was pronounced your-anus. About 15 years ago, when NASA had a probe in the area, the pronounciation suddenly changed. I guess it was awkward for obvious reasons for newscasters or teachers to say, "We have close-up shots of your anus". So, your anus became yeranis.

It's happened again with the African country of NIGER. To my knowledge, it's always been pronounced neye ger. Suddenly, on the news last night, they're doing a report on the terrible starvavtion in naye zheer.

I've always pronounced it as "Nye-Jer"

Yeah, I thought it was strange when they started pronouncing Niger differently on the news.
