August 14, 200520 yr We gave them the cash. They're only paying a few thousand dollars ($400K I read) of Leiter's $8M ($1M of that tax deductible) contract depite being responsible for it half of the year. We're on the hook for the rest. We had to. No one was going to pick up the full salary. We were desperate to get rid of him, even if we only saved $150K over whatever replacement minor leaguer's contract would be over the rest of the season. They're sending back a player to be named later or other considerations.
August 14, 200520 yr I believe the PTBNL comes from a list, which is agreed to by the Fish and the Yanks during the trade process. We can then watch them for a while and choose the one we want. Also, there normally is date by which we have to choose the PTBNL.
August 14, 200520 yr Marlins are not getting a player back. Leiter officially traded for a PTBNL or cash considerations. They already got the cash.
