August 21, 200521 yr Just to thicken the plot on this: The offense scored 6 runs without a "true" leadoff hitter, and with Pierre only coming in as an injury replacement as an ineffective 5-hole hitter. It sure does make things interesting, especially in context of this discussion... 909680[/snapback] It sure would be cool to get 2 and 3 run homers from Delgado and Cabrera every night.
August 21, 200521 yr Easley got on base twice leading off and got a 1-out hit too. That's what we need from our leadoff man. Pierre is doing that well today. But if can't do that consistently, we need a new leadoff batter.
August 21, 200521 yr Pierre has another year on his deal, but if the right offer comes available I think the Marlins would consider it. Yes, Juan Pierre is a workaholic but players today do not have the same edge they once did to help them keep up with their workouts? It may be time for Juan to re-think his off-season and in-season routines and give his body more time to rest. Are you suggesting Pierre was on steroids? :o :plain
August 21, 200521 yr Yes Pierre should be in center next year IMO He is pretty much the only guy on the team who can steal bases frequently, plus he covers a lot of ground in CF (so he doesn't dive for every ball like say Byrnes, he just gets there quicker) He is just having an off-year, and I believe he can put on some good numers again next year. I don't think Luis would be a better lead off guy, he has been playing with pain this year, and who knows if surgery really helps. We need a lead off guy who can be healthy an entire year and Pierre is much more reliable for that. I don't know if we should have both Olsen and Vargas in the starting line-up next year. Sure they have proven themselves in the short time they have been here, but Moehler was awesome in the beginning of the season too. Olsen and Vargas are both very young and they could very well tire out later in the season if they have to throw around 100 pitches every 5 days. I also kinda agree with NirvanaNole about the 3 lefty's thing, but still if Olsen and Vargas can prove they keep pitching well down the strech I wouldn't have problem with them both being in the line-up, next to Willis, Beckett and who knows who.
