Griffey hasn't done anything unexpected of him.? He shouldn't win, but probably will.? Todd Jones has surprised everyone this season.? He should win, but probably won't.

WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT???? Griffey came back from another major injury and is having a great season. If you don't think he should win you are a moron. The award is COMEBACK player of the year not surprise player of the year.

912187

I mean that Griffey has done nothing other than what he does in seasons when he is not busy getting hurt for the season. He doesn't deserve it. Todd Jones does. Don't call me a moron. There are a ton of other fans on this site that want to see Jones get it too.

You are MORON if you think Jones deserves it more then Griffey does. If you vote for Jones over Griffey because he is a marlin, thats ok you are a homer which I am also. If you think Jones actually deserves it more then Griffey does, then yes, you are a moron.

912202

Regardless of the fact that he is a Marlin, I think Todd Jones deserves it. If anything, it is my pitching bias that is speaking, not my Marlins bias.

912206

Ok what did Todd Jones come back from? Being average?

That is one way of looking at it. He hasn't had any decent seasons in the past few years and now here he is having an amazing season. Nobody expected it. It just happened. With Griffey, anyone can expect him to play well up until the point where he gets a season ending injury while making a spectacular catch.

Go look at Todd's stats from his entire career. He was pretty good in the early '90s. Then he kind of came apart for awhile. But now he is pitching beyond pretty good. Please try to relax. I am sure he wouldn't be on the ballot if he weren't considered a great comeback player. It's not like they rigged it with one comeback player and the rest of them are just regular players.

Todd Jones had some good years in Detroit and elsewhere, and came back strong despite most people thinking his career was over. If that is not a "comeback", I don't know what it is.

With that said, Griffey is deserving and will win it. But I don't think he is the most deserving. Griffey has been a bust, and it is finally living up to his contract.

I wouldn't say we should have expected this from Griffey. He's had a series of serious injuries that could have prevented him from being as good.

Nonetheless, just being healthy and playing at the level, whether he is expected to or not, is enough.

Griffey hasn't done anything unexpected of him. He shouldn't win, but probably will. Todd Jones has surprised everyone this season. He should win, but probably won't.

Regardless of your insulting and unnecessary name-calling, that doesn't make your your argument valid. The fact is Griffey has been a chronically injured (and hencely underachiever) who finally this season hasn't been injured. That hardly fits the criteria for determining a "Comeback Player of the Year".

The reason I say this is because Griffey is playing at the level expected of him. He certainly isn't exceeding expectations, not at .295 and 29 home runs. In fact one could make the case that he isn't doing what he did when last he was injury-free, 1999 and 2000, when he had 48 and 40 HRs respectively.

Griffey without a doubt is a future hall of famer, and I'm pleased on a personal level that he appears to have made it through a season without major injury, but that's alot different than some of the other players being considered.

Jones for example, and I'm touting him not because he plays here but rather because I believe he is more indicative of what the award represents, was considered pretty much in the twilight of his career, or by some, washed up. Being cut by the Devil Rays (last March) usually means your value is pretty much nil.

Instead, in 2005, it looks like he'll wind up with somewhere north of 35+ saves when most baseball experts never would have considered him for more than a middle reliever/fill-in/take one for the team guy. If you remember he was supposed to be the third or fourth guy behind Mota (1), Alfonseca (2) and then Riedling, Mecir, Jones battling it out for 3-4-5.

So while I'm happy for Griffey, rather than Comeback Player of the Year, I think he'd be better qualified for the "Player Who Finally Lived Up to His Expectations" award.

When is being an All Star and winning Reliever of the year nothing?

I'll ask again...

Where is Brian Moehler? I think he is more deserving considering what he had to go through and do as well as he has this year...

IMO. Brian Moehler is putting some good numbers, but not good enough to be considered for anything

It is strange that I didn't think of the same thing earlier because I was just recently talking to someone about how Moehler really has made quite an impressive comeback.

Here are his career stats. And keep in mind he didn't play in 2004.

Moehler's Stats

He has made quite a comeback.

Buncha clashing of homerism in this thread. At least the Jones fans know Girff has put together a great comeback. Cant' say the same for the others.

You'd be wrong. I have nothing against guy. My comments about him have either been complimentary (that he's too good to be wasted in the 1-inning closers role) or unrelated to his performance (fans' perceptions).
