"Show Up or Shut Up"

Featured Replies

I thought this was going to be another guilt trip for the fans, albeit ill-timed. But I read it and realized, FINALLY, the media seems to be getting a clue. I already asked the same question to Le Retard at the beginning of the season, 'what gives you the right to whine about attendance when it is your job and you go for free?'. Basically, the media is not an objective observer and they do not represent the voice of the people anymore. Anway, this article seems to at least acknowledge that argument...

SKOLNICK: Time to show up or shut up

Published August 11, 2003

It sometimes seems petty and shortsighted when media members chide the local populace for not attending sporting events, as if staying home shows some character deficiency.

It's easy for the media to say. We don't pay to be there. We are paid to be there. Maybe some of you simply have something better to do with your cash, your time, your life.

So if you have plans to help your kid with homework or volunteer at a soup kitchen or fill out a voter registration card, you shouldn't be guilted into going to some game.

That said, if not otherwise occupied and if interested in baseball at all, show up at Pro Player at least once during the seven-game homestand starting tonight.

Show up because sports offer nothing more exhilarating than a real baseball race. Show up because you can go in with eyes open: in 1997, H. Wayne Huizenga had only barely hinted of the selloff to come. Now, we know some sort of selloff is coming, because of impending arbitration pay hikes, so it should be enough just to enjoy this Marlins edition while it lasts.

Show up because, if you do, you might allow the organization to keep more of these players, even if only one more. Show up because, if you don't, you lose your right to complain when it doesn't.

And complaining, if not baseball, is something South Floridians really couldn't live without. ...

Whole article:

Can I get an Amen?

It's about time somebody said something. I'm tired of hearing from hipocritical Le Betard about how fans should go there, when he keeps bashing the team. It seems like his entire sports writing career is based on bashing either the Dolphins, Heat, Marlins, or Panthers.

I'm most likely going tonight and I got the hook up for Satuday too!

Finally, a columnist advising people to go to the games, instead of ripping on the team and pretty much telling people not to go. It's about time.

Seems a little negative to me. Hasn't the last couple of years proven that it doesn't work when you whine about player turnover and threaten that alot of the players won't be back, so now is your chance to go.

Sorry, but Skolnick is a chump. His articles on just about everything fulfill the stereotype that comes to mind when you see his pic in the paper - that he's too young to bring any worthwhile perspective to his subject manner.

Some of the columns the guys on this site (most of which I assume are significantly younger than Skolnick) write with more persective and more personality than Skolnick. Maybe the S-S needs to send Skolnick back to covering what's on next weeks' public school lunch menus and hire a guy or two from this site.

You sure are in a bad mood today. Is it that time of the month? (j/k)
