Steve Carrel VS. Sean Penn As The Joker?

Featured Replies

Steve Carell apparently intends to battle with Sean Penn over the role of The Joker in the sequel to Batman Begins.

He told Total Film magazine: "I would love to play the role. If it's either Sean Penn or me in line, then I want a showdown to prove which one of us is the better actor.

"We'd just have to oil up and wrestle for it."

Meanwhile, other names tipped to take the role have included Paul Bettany, Mark Hamill and Lachy Hulme.

Mark Hamill!!!

He'd be awesome!

I don't think I could take Carell seriously as the joker.

Will Arnett has my vote, although he's not being mentioned much anymore.

I concur. Mark Hamil was awesome as the voice for the Joker, and we all know he can act.

Steve Carrel isn't fit for the role.

I couldn't take Carell seriously either, he's a comedic actor. Sean Penn would be a good fit. Hamell spent years as the animated voice of the Joker, and did a good job.

Gotta be Hammill. He knows the role better than any of the other ones, and Sean Penn would make a gadawful Joker.

Gimme Hamill or Adrien Brody.

Although he's done a Batman movie before, I would like to see Jim Carrey, but he's just the kind of name they want to get rid of. I would also like to see Johnny Depp do the role, too, but see above for why it wouldn't work. Jude Law or Vince Vaughn would be admirable choices...

However, of those mentioned I'll go with Carrell. It's a chance for him to do something different and judging from the variety of things he's done on the daily show I could see him doing it.

My heart's with Mark Hamill, but he's too old.

Bingo. He's just too old.

Sean Penn isnt a bad choice at all. Easily the most talented actor on that list by a couple of miles. The guy could pull anything off (Fast Times, I Am Sam, Carlitos Way, Mystic River....). Id love to see him play The Joker.

He's in his 50's...That's not too old.

The Joker should be relative in age to Batman. Let's say no more than 8 years his senior. If Batman is 30, the Joker should be between 35-38. Not to get too technical, but he's got to have SOME prowess to match Batman in fisticuffs. Even though the Joker relies on tricks like handbuzzers and acid flower squirters he still has to be able to run away, etc.

Nicholson was 52 when he was Batman.

I considered pointing it out, but didn't feel it was necessary. YES, Nicholson was 52. But he also was in one movie. I'd prefer the Joker show up for more than one movie and be a recurring character and not just die at the end.

Just a thought. Another reason it shouldn't be Penn. Penn's a one time deal.
