I just caught a little bit where Joe was saying he's dying to hear what city officials have to say about what happened and is hoping to talk to them. Don't know if he means he's hoping to hear from them today.

I'm not going to be able to listen to the whole show. Is anyone else listening??

OK, he just said that Joe Arriola is going to be on. He tends to be an annoying one and rather blunt -- should be interesting.

This is what I was able to hear --

Joe Arriola:

Asked what does he think of D. Samson comments: ?Not much.?

He said they should have sent a professional to get it done. The Marlins didn?t show good faith. Can?t deal with uncertainty any more. Gap keeps growing and growing. David is very difficult to deal with and too sensitive. When there are arguments he pouts and he?s pouting now.

Says the City was contributing a lot and only $30m was being put in by Marlins the rest was coming from rent. That?s it.

Said there was hurricane damage to the OB and they are now trying to figure out how/whether to fix it. Then said they had been trying to find a resolution between UM & the Marlins. Indicated Samson just doesn?t know how to do business.

Asked again what he thought about David Samson?s recent comments, he said ?coming from David, I could care less what he says. He?s like a little boy pouting.?

Asked about talks with Wayne: Didn?t say too much. Wishes them luck and hopes that Marlins stay.

Called Samson a ?little boy trying to do a man?s job?. Joe said you don?t sound optimistic that anything will get done ? he said not right now, no. And not while Samson is involved. Implied would rather deal with Loria.

I hope someone else was listening and can fill in more!

He's really making himself look like an ass. Even if all these comments about Samson are true (which I believe)... as a professional, you don't come out in public and say things like "he's a little boy doing a man's job" and "he pouts when we disagree." As a professional, he simply should have said that Samson is not professional.. Just sounds like to me Arriola is trying to save his own ass by putting Samson down... bastard...

Joe did mention and had someone on who mentioned that Wayne did make an offer to help the Marlins put a stadium next to JR. The Marlins just wouldnt come up with enough money to finish the gap. Wayne didnt make a public statement about this. Then Joe made a crack about Loria being broke after his divorce and not being able to afford a stadium. Sounds like people are willing to help the Marlins just dont have enough money to cover the rest.

I know what you mean but he always sounds like that! That's just the way he is, not just when talking about Samson.

Thanks -- I didn't hear that.

Joe Rose just mentioned now that "I don't know too many people who like David Samson." He admitted he doesn't either.

I not a fan of Arriola at all but I never thought David Samson was cut out for this type of thing. The owner of a company doesn't send his accountant to present his marketing & sales plan. Not saying Samson is an accountant or posing a direct analogy, just saying everyone has roles. A guy who gets on people's nerves is at a disadvantage from the moment he walks into a room.

I am not at all implying that the Marlins were the only ones at fault for the breakdown in negotiations. I don't know what went on. Just saying, IMO, Loria should have used someone who knows what they're doing, with a good track record.

Samson is the wrong man for the job. Sure, Arriola may not have been very professional when he put Samson down, but perhaps his strategy is to put down Samson publicly so that the Marlins send someone else to deal with the city. Samson is extremely unlikeable. Why in the world would you ever send him to do this job?

On another note, it is becoming clear that Loria simply doesn't have the money to finance this. They only have $30 million to give up front on a $400+ million project? If that's true, it's pretty pathetic.

Jeffrey, we love you and are grateful for all the things you've done for the Marlins, but it's time to sell the team with someone with more money. Sell it to a local person who's going to keep the profits locally. It makes sense that some wouldn't want the owner to be from New York - he'll take his profits and spend it in New York, not Miami!

On another note, I think the Marlins ought to be grateful that Dade County and the City were willing to put up so much money. So. Florida has so many problems that continue to be unaddressed - such as the horrible congestion basically all over the city and other infrastructural problems - but yet they were willing to partially fund a brand new stadium. As much as I love the Marlins, I dread the day I move back next year and have to leave my house an hour and fifteen minutes before work because of bad traffic when it shouldn't take me longer than 10-15 minutes. We're willing to sacrifice quality of life issues to partially fund the stadium and all the Marlins can do is pledge $30 million in upfront money. If you don't have the cash, sell the damn team!

That's what the franchise gets for penny-pinching. Hire professionals to do the job. Call Holland & Knight, Greenberg Traurig, Akermen Senterfitt, or any other top law firm and pay them the big bucks to do what Samson can't do. Do things the right way, not on the cheap. It costs more in the long run to be a penny-pincher when it comes to business deals.

I just listened to Joe Ariolla on Joe Rose this morning and to say he is an embarrassment to the city of Miami would be an understatement.

This is true. However, I am looking at it from the Marlins' point of view because I want a ballpark. Therefore, the Marlins have a goal and the City/County are offering them something which the Fish need to negotiate. They cannot control who is representing the City. They can only control their side of it. They need to send the very best person for the job that they can find.

A good negotiator, like a good lawyer, is someone who can put everything, including all personal feelings, aside and focus on achieving the goal. The reality of life is that being likeable doesn't get the job done but it helps. 2 people can come to the table with the exact same plan and not have the same effect. You can only concentrate on that which you can control.

Going back to their pleas to the state legislature, surely, at some point, someone close to Jeffrey Loria must have told him that perhaps David Samson was not the right man for this job. Why is he the one out there representing Loria and the organization?

I completely agree with Prinmemito on this point.

I dont understand why MLB let Loria buy the team , lets be honest no one buys a team to make money in the short term , they buy it for ego and over the long term you make back your loses by selling it . Loria is too poor to own a team , he couldnt come up with 30 million initially to get a new stadium , despite the fact his busness is growing he guts the team. Loria is a d?ck plain and simple and while there are legit gripes he could have with the city, county and state a real professional would have got ithe stadium issue settled

Little note: that had already been done as early as June 2004! I have a really good inside source (trust me on this), and from what he tells me, the FO entered these negotiations completely clueless.

What did they do? Hire one of those law firms?

Without divulging too much information, yes, one of those law firms (actually, two of those firms one replaced the other) currently represents the Marlins, and as of just one week ago, they still do as they have been in contact with their attorneys. As I said, they've been represented since at least June 2004 when I was told of this. I know one of the attorneys very well (as in for almost 20 years).

I don't know which specific firms you're talking about, but the Marlins would be well served to go with Greenberg Traurig. It's by far the best firm in the city. It's got deep connections in city and county government.
