March 17, 200321 yr comment_4419 Nice! Scoring runs off a good pitcher like Williams is good to hear. Also good to see the long ball from this team. I don't think we have as much of a power shortage that some experts think. Outside of Pierre, Castillo, and Alex, everyone can go deep. Maybe not 30+, but everyone has the ability. March 17, 200321 yr Author comment_4420 Game called after 8 innings due to rain. Marlins win 9-3! The Marlins had 13 hits in this game. Combined with the 8 runs and 15 hits the Marlins got in the Reds game, that makes a total of 17 runs and 28 hits for the Marlins today. Not too shabby for a supposedly offensively-challenged team. March 17, 200321 yr comment_4422 full game summary link JUPITER, Fla. -- Derrek Lee homered, tripled and drove in four runs, and Pudge Rodriguez added a two-run home run Monday as the Marlins rolled over the Cardinals 9-3 in a rain-shortened contest at Roger Dean Stadium. The Marlins' 13-hit attack gave starter Josh Beckett plenty of run support before the game was called after 7 2/3 innings. Beckett threw five scoreless innings in his best outing of the spring. The 22-year-old Texan gave up five hits, struck out four, hit one batter and didn't issue a walk. Lee's two-run home run in the first inning off Woody Williams gave the Marlins the early lead. It was the first baseman's first home run of the spring, and it scored Rodriguez, who kept the inning alive with a two-out single. Lee drove in two more runs with a triple that dropped just inside the right-field line in the third, giving the Marlins a 4-0 lead. Again, the Marlins rallied with two outs. Gerald Williams floated a single to left, then stole second. After Rodriguez walked, Lee popped a fly down to right. Eduardo Perez made the long run, but couldn't catch up with the ball, which dropped just fair and then skipped up the line. Williams and Rodriguez scored easily as Lee cruised into third standing up. Lee's four RBIs today give him 10 for the spring. He went 3-for-4, missing a double to complete the cycle. Rodriguez helped break the game open with a two-run homer in a three-run fifth inning. The former All-Star with the Rangers now has two home runs and a team-high 12 RBIs in Grapefruit League play. whew...finally beat those stinkin' Cards. Beckett cruising and our big bats hitting, that's what I like to see. March 18, 200321 yr comment_4426 I think the key this year is for our offense to score runs early...IT seemed like last year the Marlins started scoring their runs after the 6th inning when the other team's bullpen came in..Score runs early and give the pitcher's some breathing room so they can go out and pitch well instead of being pressured to throw perfect pitches to keep the other team's runs down..Usually, that's when mistake pitches are thrown and they get clobbered...
