September 2, 200322 yr The Marlins gave up 2 prospects, when the Orioles would've been lucky to get a bucket of baseballs from any other team for Conine; and in the process they bypassed a number of superior players that were available. That's not a "great" trade by any stretch of the imagination. I take it you are considering Matt Stairs, John Vander Wal, Scott Spiezio and Reggie Sanders (who was claimed by LA which prevented a trade) superior players? I would've gone for Conine too.

I would've gone for Conine too. Yes, they are superior players. Conine has zero defensive value, and can't hit as well as Stairs or Sanders. Spiezio can play anywhere on the diamond other than C, SS, and CF (and do it well) and is hitting only slightly less than Conine.

I think that what you can't find in the stats is what Conine brings to this team. He IS Mr. Marlin. I can see no uproar, no standing ovation by the fans if we got Matt Stairs. The fans KNOW what Jeff Conine can do, and they will continue to rally around this team.
September 2, 200322 yr All you need to know about Stairs is that he's a Journeyman who plays part time. Now, if MLB FO's and managers don't think he's good enough to keep around long-term and/or play every day why should we? And Stairs is a trainwreck in the OF, too. Imagine an overweight, white-trash mullet-head running around a tire-less 1977 Chevy Monte Carlo in the front yard of his mobile home.. That's Matt Stairs going after a fly ball.
