With Nick Goings not being a feature back since the 2004 season, and Steve Smith being the best WR in the NFL this year, the Seahawks will focus their max effort IMO into making Goings make mistakes and constantly double cover and if necessary triple covering Smith. Pressure on Delhomme is high as well, as he has shown he is an elite postseason QB(and one of the best and most underrated reg season QBs).

 

But, with pressure on Delhomme(which he showed against Chicago he can escape), max coverage on Smith, and trying to stop Goings(who even though he hasn't been the #1 guy in a while...he did ok the last time he was in this position), that opens up three guys who I think will have big games for Carolina against Seattle: Keary Colbert, Ricky Proehl, and Drew Carter.

 

Proehl is a big time vetern known for clutch receptions. On a long drive with too much coverage on Smith, this opens up a guy who knows how to snag the ball in big situations.

 

Colbert is, IMO, the next Steve Smith for this team. These two occupying the #1 and #2 spots on the depth chart at WR bodes well for Carolina for many years to come. Because of Smiths breakout year, Colbert didn't get a chance to show what he could really do, but in starts last year replacing injured vets, Colbert showed he could get the job done, making several big catches in Carolinas ill-fated but almost unbelieveable run at the postseason in 04.

 

And Carter might never be a starting WR, but he has one skill that could make him a big time playoff WR...speed. He will get put up against Seattles 3rd or 4th CB due to Smith, and it's likely that he will be able simply dash past them, setting up a long reception from Delhomme. Unfortunately, I don't think he is the best at running routes and his hands aren't the greatest, and this trick would probably only work 2 times at most(setting up a better player in the secondary to cover him while letting the d-back that was on him move over to help cover Smith), but 2 times would still help open up for Goings. I wouldn't be suprised if the first Panthers play was a long pass attempt to Carter.

 

So while I think Smith, Goings, and Delhomme will have most of the defensive attention, that depth of quality at the WR position could help reopen Smith or draw the defense out setting up a big run for Goings.

seattle doesn't blitz all that much - but they do have an aggressive front 4

 

if they are smart they will double smith every possession ... with goings the only thing concerns me is getting some success running inside and the carolina OL wearing down a smallish interior seattle line

 

however the hawks have only allowed one 100 yard rusher all year (tiki barber) and have been pretty good on run D ... the LBs have range and with goings lack of spead the outside rush isn't a concern

 

proehl is crafty, but not really a deep threat - herndon should be able to hang with him 1 on 1

 

the other WR can be covered by dyson ... dyson should be able to get some help as well

 

that leaves trufant and a safety on smith

 

seattle is playing with a backup free safety (marquand manuel) who is more of a hitter than a coverage guy

 

jordan babineaux is the better coverage safety and may see time as well

 

seattle's pass D has been suspect all season and that is what concerns me most about this matchup

 

seattle just needs to jump out early - keep the crowd involved and stay in a rythmm for their offense ... when the hawks are playing at their tempo they are very very tough - if their tempo is disrupted they become very beatable

Actually, in my first post, I said double coverage and if necessary triple coverage on Smith.

 

Pressure on Delhomme and Goings.

 

That would mean WR that are better than you give them credit for(in Proehl and Colbert) and another one who is quite fast in Carter. Your right probably single coverage for all, but if thats the case it will be lesser d-backs covering them.

He isnt the best WR is the league for nothing. He has skillz whether he is a f***ing midget or if he is 7' tall. We arent acting like they will have 11 guys on him but you can bet after his performance against the Bears that they will be paying extra special attention to him especially with Goings at starting RB.

Just because he's not a jump ball threat doesn't mean he's not a red zone threat. All it takes is for him to be half a step quicker than the corner on a short route (like a slant, quick out, slant & out, etc.) and he gets enough separation to catch a short pass and take it the (short) distance into the end zone. This is assumming Delhomme can fit the ball in tight spaces consistently (which is debateable IMO, but whatever) and get the ball to an open Steve Smith as well in the red zone as he can anywhere else on the field.

 

Quickness, which Smith has in spades, is just as valuable in the red zone as anywhere on the field and makes him a big time red zone threat.

Spike's beloved Panthers look like sh*t....

I never said they'd win. Just how they could go about winning. No running game to speak of hurt...putting Davis on IR was not a good move, Shelton got hurt, and Foster getting a broken ankle last week...and Goings being innefective(and then getting a concussion). Jake D had to force throws. Poor guy, I think Carolina/Pittsburgh would of been a better matchup than Seattle/Pittsburgh.

Ya it aint fun and wasn't deserved. I passed the field sobriety test and was going to be let go with just a warning for no license plate light, but then a state cop pulled up and had to be real...bastardly about it.
