The Chicago Cubs and pitcher Wade Miller agreed Monday to a one-year contract that will pay $1 million in salary and up to another $1 million in bonuses based on the number of starts he makes.

 

Bothered by shoulder problems, the 29-year-old right-hander was 4-4 with a 4.95 ERA in 16 starts in his lone season with the Boston Red Sox. He spent the first five weeks and the final two months on the disabled list, and the Cubs expect him to miss at least the first month of this season.

 

Miller was with the Houston Astros for his first six major league seasons, going 16-8 in 2001 and 15-4 in 2002. He is 62-43 with five complete games and a 3.98 ERA during his career.

 

"We've always thought world of him," general manager Jim Hendry said. "He's a winning-type guy."

 

Miller would earn bonuses of $100,000 for 10 starts, $200,000 for 15, $300,000 for 20 and $400,000 for 25.

Damn, for that type of money...I would love for the Red Sox to have taken another stab at him, although we don't really have the spot for him. Someone eventually is going to come out of a deal with him really, really well.

So $2 million if he stays healthy?

They Cards were talkin to him.. That's about the only thing that happened and the Cubs deal was the best for him.. While I think this is a good move for the Cubs due to the potential here, I love that the Cubs are taking on another player that's injured a lot..

I always liked Wade during his years with the Stros.

 

 

Not really sure if there is a spot for him right now, especially if they are as high on some of their younger pitchers as they would have you believe.

I like Wade but me thinks he may not ever find that form he had in 2001/02

Yeah, but right now the Cubs have seven reasonably good pitchers in Prior, Wood for about 3 weeks, Zambrano, Maddux, Rusch, Williams, and Miller. That's better depth than most teams can claim and they seem to be high on Nolasco as well as Rich Hill.
