February 3, 200620 yr The legalization of many of the now illegal drugs can be the source for a great revenue source for this nation to fund many of the stupid things we do, and also to fund some of the things we should be doing as well. But they are bad for you so we must keep them illegal. Well liquor is bad for you also, hell so are Big Macs...but they are legal.... That's good enough. What is with your bull sh*t lately? It isn't adding up.

February 3, 200620 yr Comparing Big Macs to heroin is not a strong basis for argument. i'm actually comparing things that can kill you.
February 3, 200620 yr Reason heroin kills you is a matter of doses and purity. If you are used to a certain purity at a certain dose, and all of a sudden you administer that same dose of some purer (more pure?) stuff...thats what kills people. Anyway, the argument is to legalize these heavier drugs with lots and lots of regulations. (like clinics where addicts can be administered the drug). The argument that people will then go off and do something stupid afterwards holds no ground here. Drinking is legal, drunk driving isn't. Guns are legal, mass murder isn't. Just because something is legal does not mean you should be allowed to be irresponsible with it. Crime associated to smuggling is so unnecessary. Once you legalize these things (to a certain extent of course) that crime has no reason to be there. Heroin and Cocaine are the main ones here, but Meth and all the amphetamines should be too. I mean, look at what doctors are prescribing to kids with ADD these days. Have any of you heard/tried of adderol? The whole war on drugs not only is bulls***, but its a complete f***ing farce.
February 3, 200620 yr Anyway, the argument is to legalize these heavier drugs with lots and lots of regulations. (like clinics where addicts can be administered the drug). If the regulation is that there are only clinics where addicts can be administered the drug... The addicts had to get started somewhere. There would still be these drugs on the street. Therefore, there would still be smuggling. The argument that people will then go off and do something stupid afterwards holds no ground here. Drinking is legal, drunk driving isn't. Guns are legal, mass murder isn't. Just because something is legal does not mean you should be allowed to be irresponsible with it. So we should make heroin legal, and then say that doing something under the influence of heroin is illegal? If we said sex with minors is legal, but raping them in the process isn't, would that stop people from raping minors? (Hint: no) Just because drinking and gun ownership are legal but byproducts of their use isn't doesn't mean we have to extend that avenue to everything in the world. And there will always be some sort of black market. If heroin was made legal to buy, people would still sell it to minors. The only way there would never be smuggling is if it was completely legal with no regulations. Is it worth it to trade the safety of tons of people to completely stop smuggling? I'm too lazy to find statistics to back me up here (what a wonderful politician I'm going to make) but I'd be willing to bet the number of smuggling incidents has dropped considerably. If every now and then there's a huge bust...so be it. It doesn't mean we should let a dangerously potent drug be easy to access just so the government gets rich off it instead of the smugglers.

Big Macs can fry your central nervous system? no just clog the arteries beyond belief. Laughably different. Have 4 Big Macs on one day, and your heart won't stop on itself. Do heroin four times in one day and you're in the E.R., likely the coroner's office. You can binge on any legal substance without running the risk of seriously lethal damage from the substance alone, any from of amphetamine will kill you almost on the spot if you go on an all-day binge.

February 3, 200620 yr Yeah, a couple more million people doing herion in this country isn't as bad as people smuggling. Should we get rid of all laws that people find ways around by breaking other laws?
February 3, 200620 yr No, its not sarcasm. I believe one should be free to do to his/her own body as he/she pleases. If they choose to destroy themselves then so be it. Prohibitionism is never, ever going to work. In fact it only makes things worse (more people want to try certain drugs just because the authority says they can't). Not only that, but making these drugs illegal is not going to solve anything, the problem is not going to go away. Making these drugs illegal creates crime that doesn't need to be there. People are not going to stop using illegal drugs, they don't in China where if you get caught with any amount you get executed, what makes you think they would in the US? The crime associated to these drugs is there mostly because they are illegal...drugs need to be legalized (with regulations obviously). I agree with the "your body, your choice" argument most of the time, but I think that some things such as heroin should be kept illegal. Marijuana by all means legalize, maybe a couple of other drugs here and there. But some are just too crazy to control.

Sitting out in the sun will kill you slowly too, or eating fried chicken, anything will kill you if given enough time to affect your body. Why legalize something that can kill instantly in high quantities for a society that knows no self control?
February 3, 200620 yr This talk of making herion and all other kinds of drugs legal is the stupidest thing i have ever heard of. I think the U.S. should have a bigger milatery role in Colombia including more troops, guns, helicopters, DEA, Navy Seals and Green Berets. Yet the FARC is losing some of the territory of previous years. May the seeds of coruption be wiped out and the government of Colombia prevail and the FARC collapse.
February 3, 200620 yr Making something legal does not necessarily translate into more people doing it. I would argue its the exact opposite because to many these things only have appeal because they are illegal. Lets forget about heroin for a second, and go back to something most of you would agree on: marijuana. If legalized, I believe teenagers would have less interest in trying it because there would be no mystery around it, and they wouldn't be breaking the rules. In holland it is legal, not every Dutch person is a pot head. In fact, majority of them never even smoke.

I agree with you on marijuana, and I'm a conservative and I've never smoked in my life and never plan to. But heroin can kill you pretty instantly. No, it doesn't necessarily mean more people would do it, but it puts that possibility out there.

If it was legal, more people might not do it...but the people who already do it would do it more often without the fear of consequences.
February 3, 200620 yr There's still consequences, it's just a real choice if it's legalized. Putting aside all the good it would do for our belief in the ideology we preach and all the different sectors of society that would benefit thanks to cause and effect, legalizing marijuana doesn't mean everyone would do it. Businesses would still have the right to drug test you and deny your job application if you test positive. That's their right just the same. Schools would also still work to stop it, because I doubt anyone is advocating legalization for those 17 and under. There would be laws in place similar to drunk driving laws for those who do choose to smoke marijuana. There would be consequences, but only if you messed up while doing it. Legalizing marijuana would allow for those who feel they are responsible enough to make it a hobby to do so. No one likes people who takes things to extreme, but that happens with every thing anyways. You just put a fail-safe in place for the 1% that's going to blow it, and you move on. It's all about privacy and freedom of choice. If you want to smoke, that's fine. I personally don't care. If I were a business man, I wouldn't mind people smoking out on the weekends as so long as it doesn't affect their work while they are on my time. But as soon as it starts causing problems, then you axe them. Simple enough, no need to get jail time and cops involved for a few blunts.
