Colombians hid heroin in puppies

Featured Replies

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Colombian drug dealers smuggled heroin into the United States by surgically implanting the powerful drug into puppies, the Drug Enforcement Administration said on Wednesday.

Special Agent-in-Charge John Gilbride of the DEA's New York Field Division said in a statement that 21 Colombian nationals were arrested on Wednesday for smuggling over 20 kilograms (44 lb) of heroin, worth $20 million at street prices, into the United States.

Among the methods used to transport the drugs were human couriers, who swallowed heroin packets, as well as the Labrador Retriever puppies. In one planned shipment, six puppies were found impregnated with three 3 kg (6.6 lb) of liquid heroin packets.

DEA spokeswoman Erin McKenzie-Mulvey said that in January 2005, DEA officers and police in Colombia found six puppies with scars on their bellies at a makeshift veterinarian clinic on a rural property.

Ultrasound scans revealed the heroin hidden inside the young dogs, three of which later died of infection. Another four puppies were found with no drugs inside them, she said.

McKenzie-Mulvey said the traffickers had planned to retrieve the heroin after the dogs had passed U.S. customs.

She said the surviving dogs are now, "living happily with families in Colombia."

The smugglers also hid heroin in body creams and aerosol cans and sewed it into the lining of purses and luggage, the DEA said.

"The organization's outrageous and heinous smuggling method of implanting heroin inside puppies is a true indication of the extent that drug dealers go to make their profit," Gilbride said.

Wednesday's arrests -- 20 in Colombia and one in North Carolina -- followed a two-year investigation with Colombian police of a drug ring based in Medellin, Colombia, whose network reached from Miami to New York, the DEA said.

The DEA hopes to bring nine of those arrested to New York to face charges. Colombia is the main supplier of heroin to the United States.

Um......that's f*cked up. Puppies are so cute and tiny...how can your level of morality sink that low...

It's the law enforcements' fault that its come to this. They've made it so hard to smuggle.

LEGALIZE IT.

I really hope that's sarcasim.

No, its not sarcasm.

I believe one should be free to do to his/her own body as he/she pleases. If they choose to destroy themselves then so be it. Prohibitionism is never, ever going to work. In fact it only makes things worse (more people want to try certain drugs just because the authority says they can't).

Not only that, but making these drugs illegal is not going to solve anything, the problem is not going to go away. Making these drugs illegal creates crime that doesn't need to be there. People are not going to stop using illegal drugs, they don't in China where if you get caught with any amount you get executed, what makes you think they would in the US? The crime associated to these drugs is there mostly because they are illegal...drugs need to be legalized (with regulations obviously).

so yeah, If anyone wants to see a good movie about smuggling drugs and drug mules and such, watch Maria Full of Grace... its badass!

now, on to the subject at hand... its messed up that smugglers do such things, with no regard for life of innocent creatures, but w/e, hopefully law enforcement will wise up and stop all this...

'wise up'?

Just me, but heroin should never ever be legalized.

Make your case for marajuana, but amphetamines are just too damn dangerous to legalize.

Agreed.

Amphetamines are way too dangerous.

That's f***ed up.

Im in agreement with sandro. This war on drugs is not being won in the least. Total legalization is not good. But if we can undercut the massive profits that drugs have, then we can lower the number of people willing to supply the drugs. Im not sure how to do that but perhaps subsidized clinics that provide the drugs but weed people off of them at the same time. But Im not going to fight viciously for it. Marijuana legalization is much more important.

The legalization of many of the now illegal drugs can be the source for a great revenue source for this nation to fund many of the stupid things we do, and also to fund some of the things we should be doing as well.

But they are bad for you so we must keep them illegal. Well liquor is bad for you also, hell so are Big Macs...but they are legal....

You want to legalize marijuana, fine by me (this coming from a conservative college student who's never smoked in his life and never plans too).

But heroin is way too dangerous to be legalized. You wanna make the argument that Big Macs are as dangerous as is heroin? Go ahead, I'll wait for it.

Big Macs can fry your central nervous system?

No, its not sarcasm.

yea but their "choices" can adversly affect other innocent people

worst ending ever

i don't think its so much that people care what you do to yourself...but you get f***ed up and go and do something stupid... i.e drink and drive and hit someone and kill them then you're effecting someone else.

I saw this on TV yesterday, it's absolutely disgusting. Clearly it's a new low that drug smugglers have moved towards.

i dont recall mentioning any drug that should be legalized by name.

Over the course of how many years?

Cna they kill you as quickly as heroin can? Can they make it possible for you to harm others?

no but they still kill you and are perfectly legal.

so now legality should be based on how quickly it can kill you and/or kill others.

lets make guns illegal then also, i mean you can kill someone instantly with one of those.

Das

you are trying way too hard to be contrary these days.

Seriously.
