Preliminary hearing is postponed

Castro lawyer requests delay

BY KEVIN BAXTER

The preliminary hearing in the sex-abuse case of Marlins catcher Ram?n Castro, scheduled for Thursday, has been delayed until early October, according to J. Alan Johnson, the player's attorney.

Johnson, a prominent western Pennsylvania lawyer and former U.S. attorney, said he asked for extra time to prepare a defense.

Johnson said he hired two private investigators to look into the claims against Castro and the 28-year-old woman who brought them.

Castro, 27, was arrested in Pittsburgh last week and charged with rape, involuntary deviant sexual intercourse, sexual assault and unlawful restraint. The player said he met the woman in a restaurant at the team hotel and told Pittsburgh police he had consensual sex with her, but insists he is innocent of the charges.

Thanks for the up-date. Glad to know Castro apparently has competent, aggressive counsel. Hope he is innocent of the crime. Also hope he gets traded. I can't root for him anymore. I'm disgusted with him. (Guess I'm just old-fashioned.)

That's the thing with America. Every time A big-time court case comes up (i.e. OJ, Robert Blake), or an athlete stands accused, everyone always presumes that they are guilty. I haven't even heard all sides of this case to form an opinion yet. It's a shame that these guys are getting crucified by the public before they even start a trial.

Chill out with your holier than thou attitude. Castro, a married man with two children has admitted to the sex. I said I hope he's not also guilty of the crime.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. I don't have a holier than thou attitude. I'm just generalizing how I feel the American public treats people who are put in the limelight for their accused crimes. I'm sorry if my opinion offended you.

Arnie is just pointing out the fact he can't root for the guy anymore, neither can I. I hope, for the womans sake, the accusations are false. He did admit to the sex though, which makes him a scumbag now no matter what. I'm sure other athletes cheat on their wives but at least we don't know about it.

Hey, if he's on the Marlins, I'll root for him. I really don't want to talk anymore on this subject.

"at least we don't know about it".

that about sums it up right there. so castro's worse than the others because he wasn't careful.

fans routinely cheer for players no matter how badly they act. get busted for coke? drunk driving? beat up your wife? hit-&-run car wreck? fathered 20 kids all with different wives? doesn't make any difference to most fans. they want performance, they'll overlook character flaws and felonies.

i don't know castro or his family. i don't think cheating on your wife is particularly honorable, and this comes from a guy who's getting married soon....

but neither will it stop me from rooting for him. it's between him & his wife.

wasn't it Al Martin who supposedly was married to 2 women at once? Personally I'd say that's worse than cheating on your wife, but are you telling me that fans wouldn't have been cheering for him on if he was with the Marlins? Heck, even most of us were b***hing when he didn't make the team.

Just some food for thought...

i'm not singling anyone out, or arguing the right not to root for him, just the hypocrisy that some fans have when it comes to stuff like this.

Great thread. It is an interesting point to make that most fans will root for a player regardless of their atrocious behavior off the field, I wonder how many would like to see these guys move in next door to them?

Great to see you've maintained the old democratic maxim of innocent until proven guilty. I myself subscribe to it too in most cases, but not usually rape. Fact is CSC cases have a vary high rate of successful prosecution once they get to the point where charges are filed. Castro will probably cop to a lesser plea and get a couple thousand cummunity service hours or some garbage like that.

my signature says it all. in other words, you go with the wrong "hoe", they could f*** you up nasty. Ramon obviously picked the wrong hoe if it was consensual. if it was rape, than he's a b*tch who should be getting a taste of his own medicine in prison. im not passing judgement, im just saying the truth
