THE ULTIMATE Braves homer comment.

Featured Replies

Look what a Braves fan I know posted on another message board. This just takes the cake.

Edgar Renteria: .276 BA, 8 HRs, 70 RBIs, 9 SBs, .335 OBP, 30 errors

Rafael Furcal: .284 BA, 15 HRs, 58 RBIs, 46 SBs, .348 OBP, 15 errors

that almost evens out. yea, Furcal had a better BA, more HRs, more SBs, better OBP, and less errors, but Renteria did have more RBIs. Furcal had a better BA by .008. Furcal had 7 more HRs, had 37 more SBs, his OBP was .013 better, and made 15 less errors. Renteria had 12 more RBIs than Furcal. so we r not droppin off big time at SS

Okay, so Furcal has the better batting average, more homeruns, a ton more stolen bases, a better OBP and less errors but since Renteria has 12 more RBI's it evens out? That makes since.

Furcal had a better BA, more HRs, more SBs, better OBP, and less errors, but Renteria did have more RBIs.

I love it.

if the guy wants to make any arguement for Renteria's sake, you can make a case that if he performs like he did in St. Louis, it would be an upgrade...In 2004, he had a huge dropoff offensively, but factor in defense, and he was still at least equal to furcal...in 2005, his defense turned to crap too

That being said, to say that it's a push because he had more RBIs in ridiculous.

That wasnt the smartest thing to say but I believe Renteria will play like he played in St. Louis and be better than Furcal will be next year.

Here's the only argument you can make (since I like El Nino ;) )

1) Despite the drop in average, his OBP in 2005 actually improved over 2004.

2) Compared to his career averages, Renteria did not have a terribly bad season.

Career average: .288/.345, 10, 71, 28 SB

2005: .276/.335, 8, 70, 9 SB

And for good measure, 2004: .287/.327, 10, 72

Honestly, he came as advertised, the Red Sox (and their fans) probably just built him up to be something that he wasn't (2003 was a career year, not a career norm). That pressure probably weighed heavily on him and caused him to "force" a lot, evidenced by the sharp increase of both strikeouts and errors.

All he needs to do is get the stolen base numbers back to where they were (high teens, low 20's) and I think that this can be a good move for the Braves.

I mean, using the Damon/Crisp logic, where you calculate what you lost versus how much it would have cost you to keep/pay the replacement, this may actually be a stellar move for the Braves given that Furcal had a career year in a contract year while Renteria, as "bad" as he was, wasn't all that far off from his career averages that had him considered to be one of the elite short-stops in baseball. Plus, they're pretty much getting Renteria for free, can't beat that.

Bingo.

Although they weren't alone, he's one of the more overrated players of the last decade. He's a solid player, but he was getting mentioned among the elite SS in the game there for a while when it simply wasn't true.

Furcal had a better BA, more HRs, more SBs, better OBP, and less errors, but Renteria did have more RBIs.

There's a limit to wisdom, but there's no limit to stupidity.

He came as advertised offensively, but I think most Red Sox fans were more disappointed with how horrible his defense was. He was a repeat gold glover in the NL, then had a horrendous year his one season in Boston.

Honestly, a lot of St Louisans predicted that he would be bad in Boston. Maybe part of it was because they wanted him to stay with the Cardinals, and they were bitter when he left, but at the same time, Renteria has always been a shy person, it doesn't take a lot for him to be uncomfortable, and if he's uncomfortable, he's not going to play well. The media and fan pressure in Boston is a lot greater than it was in St Louis, and that probably unnerved him. On the same note, I would expect him to at least somewhat bounce back this season, since he's again going to a place where the media pressure is light, and the fan pressure is non-existent.

Renteria has been a good player for a long time and will be fine coming back to the NL. He still scored 100 runs and drove in 70, so he wasn't that bad on offense. I think he will tighten his defense back up with Atlanta.

I don't know what it is with Boston....but it eats players up. Manny Ramirez wants out, Pedro and Clemens had no problems walking away.

When I think of media centers in this country.....Boston wouldn't come up in my top 10, so I wonder what goes on up there?

Manny doesn't know what he wants. We haven't heard a peep out of him since we got Tavarez and Wilson. Plus, alot of these players got fat and happy after we won the World Series.

Boston/Dan Duquette let Clemens go.

Pedro didn't get the contract he wanted.

I don't think the crowd/media got to Edgar as much as playing a bulk of the year injured.
