Note, I'm not counting the UM game in any of my uses of stats or any of my comments

 

PITCHING

*Willis of course will be our ace, so we just hope he stays healthy.

*Buddy Carlyle relieved Dontrelle in the 3rd and got his one out. I think he'll be one of the first cuts as he's 29 years old with little success at any level.

*Josh Johnson again struggled with his control, walking 2 in 2 innings, but escaped unscathed in the run department. Spring training represents a battle for him to secure double digit starts for the Fish this season as a back-end of the rotation guy. I believe control will continue to be a big issue as it was a problem him in the minors, however Johnson has tremendous ability to keep the ball in the park.

*Joe Borowski...Guy looked pretty good in his Marlins debut and looks poised to give the Marlins a veteran at the closing spot.

*Future closer/setup man, Chris Resop came into the 7th allowing a walk, but no runs. He figures to compete for a top middle relief spot or a setup role.

*Randy Messenger got roughed up pretty good, allowing 4 hits and 3 runs. He still figures to occupy a middle relief spot in the pen.

*Failed prospect Ryan Rupe closed the game for a save with a perfect 9th. Probably AAA depth.

 

HITTING

*Han-Ram and Andino opened their battle for SS with base hits apiece. Amezega is playing in Mexico and we saw no sign of Reese.

*Much discussed Dan "Beast, Uggs, Uggie, Uuuuuggggla" Uggla picked up a basehit with no strikeouts. I will mention his performance yesterday against UM because he smacked the ball around and his only out came at the wall in CF. Guy looks good so far. Any reports on his defense at 2B?

*At 1B Jacobs singled in 3 ABs and Stokes took over later striking out in both ABs. Weak strike zone judgement continues to hinder Stokes's chances at a ML job.

*3B...uhh Cabs.

*Olivo and Treanor combined to go 0-5 at catcher. I wonder if Olivo getting the first start there is significant. I know Willy played some catcher yesterday, but this was against ML competition.

*Willingham obliterated a ball for a 2-run shot and, of course, walked, making no outs. EAT IT SPIKE.

*Hermida singled and played RF. He's got the job locked down tight in my opinion.

*rferry's darkhorse, Matt Cepicky, continued to swing a good stick with 2 more hits out of LF today.

*Eric Reed, front-runner for CF collected a basehit along with a walk. If he can improve his plate eye to average he may just get on enough to leadoff for us.

*Aguila walked in his 2 ABs and could definitely challenge Reed for some CF starts and will probably get starts at all 3 OF positions. I like him for a 4th OFer and maybe a starting CFer if he can handle it defensively.

Awesome post, Shamrock... It's obviously way too early, but if this is a sign of things to come, I think Uggla, Hermida, Cabs, Jacobs, and Willingham can pack a pretty potent lineup.

I'm glad JJ (Josh Johnson) did well. I hope he keeps it up during the rest of ST and wins a spot in the rotation. As I've said, I have high hopes for him and think he will suprise a number of people and be one of the bright spots on our team this year.

And I dont hate Willingham. I think he could be a great utility guy, but as an everyday player...I dont think he has it in him.

He hit well at AA when he was older than the competition. He hit well in triple a like everyone else. At the MLB level, he hit poorly, and then better against late season callups.

 

I have seen nothing that would suggest the total domination at the plate like many here suggest.

 

Jason Bay dropped it like its hot as a 27 year old rookie, but I dont see Willingham having the same type of impact, or any impact for that matter. My guess, and we will see as the season goes on, is he will struggle to hit .200 and will show little power.

The only problem that I have with your opinion is the voracity with which you push it and the nearly COMPLETE lack of credible evidence to support it. It's one of the most untenable and retarded positions a student of the game can have on such an advanced hitter as Willingham. Say what you will it smacks of hate. :mischief2

Willingham didn't just hit well at AAA like everyone else. He was leading the league in HR's and SLG% and was 2nd in OBP% when he was called up. He was smashing the ball and getting on base consistently.
